If you aren't good with accents, you won't understand him. He's intimidating, and you better have a thick skin if you speak up in class--if you say something he thinks is stupid, he'll let you know. Don't cite sources if he doesn't like the authors; anything he doesn't agree with he considers non-academic. Plus side: he knows his stuff.

I really liked him as a Professor. Often cracked jokes in his lectures, usually about the Bombers. Clarity was his weakest point, but if you follow his general line of thought then you'll pick up on the important things you'll need to know for the exam. Know your dates. You don't need a textbook, just do some research on your own.

As below doesn't facilitate taking notes, but given the structure point form is fine to point you at book sections. Gives exam topics prior to midterm so prep was easy if you spent a day on it. I simply wrote a 5 minute answer on each topic from the book and rewrote it on the MT, no idea why people failed. Know dates and acronyms for exam.

Very interesting course, would have been much better taught by someone who knew how to teach. He CLEARLY knows what he is talking about, but he makes note-taking next to impossible, not to mention you have no idea what he is saying half the time. Monotone and VERY quiet. Needs to be taught by someone who can teach.

Awesome prof, grades harshly, but if you talk to him, there are usually ways to raise your grade, if you're willing to do some extra work. Test and non-essay assignment are easy. Remember your dates if you want to do better than a B on exams and tests. Most people know alot going in and he knows it but if you don't you can read the text to catch up

I took several classes with Prof. Gerus...Hist. of Ukraine, Hist. of Russia & Hist. of the Soviet Union. Subsequently, I believe he is a very good professor. I found his classes to be interesting and I learned a great deal as his student. In fact, Prof. Gerus was my favorite professor at the U of M! He is very knowledgeable & approachable.

awful grading! beware! he doesn't mark his own term work (has a grad student to) but does mark the final exam! you have no idea what he is expecting. lectures were dry but I enjoyed the movies. if you don't have an extreme interest in Russian history to begin with you will not survive the class. I went into the exam with an A+ and left with a B!

I really enjoyed him. I did not find his lectures boring at all, although I did fall asleep during a few of the movies (but the lights were off and it was early) I thought he was really fair in his marking, and if you were unhappy with the mark you recived, he was open to rewrite and revisions. I was very satisfied and would take another course

very boring, snob of a prof. I am an Education Major-- and thsi man does not do a single thing to hold a classes attention-- the sad part is that this was an attempt to learn about my own culture, and i couldn't even drag myself out of bed for the class...needs some zip--- hard to take notes, very jumpy.

Easy for an honours course. Take-home exam, fair marker on presentations and final paper. Provides students with books to help with assignments. Constantly bugged us about our lack of participation, so shifted marks from this into other areas (which helped a lot). Fair, nice guy, but pretty boring. All in all, I would recommend.

Oleh has to be one of the worst I've experienced at the U of M. Unbelievably nit picky and dry, he is also crotchety and defensive when his arbitrary marking is questioned. Gave our entire class C's(I managed a B) and effectively killed my interest in the field. I sincerly hope this guy retires SOON!

His lectures are pretty dry with occasional humour (likes to make fun of Saskatchewan), seems intimidating in lectures, but very helpful outside of class/in office hours. A hard-but-fair marker. Knows his stuff very well.

Really funny guy. but its a pain to take down notes because he jumps all over the place. Also the videos he shows are pretty much useless. In the end as long as you memorize the topics for the midterm and the final and you put a good effort into your paper you should do okay. He really likes to tease phys ed majors, which i am. haha

Very interesting class. Prof really knows his material and has good films. Essays are marked tough, but test and exam are fair and easy if you like memorizing. He likes C+ B and B+ grades, so you will have to impress him for an A. Kind of seems intimidating at first, but an okay prof.

Awesome teacher and very funny if you are smart enough to get his jokes. And if you're not that smart you'll probably fail the class anyway. Show up for class, and you'll get an easy mark. He does grade his essays a little harder than some other profs, but tests and exams are simple!

Knows what he's talking about even though he shows a lot of videos. Kind of hard to take notes from, but I ended up not needing any notes. You don't even really have to read the entire book, just small sections for the straitforward midterm and final.
