Prof. Shipton is an outstanding, eccentric professor. Extremely well educated, well read, and well traveled, he seems to have lived a dozen lives and can't wait to share his knowledge with students. His quirky, unconventional thinking strategies encourage students to reach great heights. IF you have the opportunity, take his class.

He is one of the most thoughtful, caring, and intellectual professors I have ever had at BU. He is unique in that he actually cares about his students, and is always happy to meet with them. His exams are extremely fair; anyone who thinks otherwise or is willing to complain to this length has clearly not studied sufficiently. Their fault, not his.

One of the most disorganized professors that I have EVER had at BU. He told us that he wouldn't have our papers graded until next semester. He tells you the essay topics in advance but that's usually only half of the test. The other half of the tests he literally pulls out of his butt. His lectures are unorganized and off-topic. DON'T TAKE IT.

He's insane, but fun. Lectures are entertaining most of the time; he loves group work and DIAGRAMS; lots of reading, but appropriate for the class; very nice and helpful; office is a nightmare; responds to email effectively

Engaging and fun to listen to... but probably legally insane. Exams were easy, save the short answer identifications. WAY too much reading... 14+ books!

i absolutely love this man! he is so passionate, so energetic, so brilliant. the two-pagers he assigns weekly are easy + the study questions he provides really help with the exams, so don't let the workload discourage you from taking his class. he really makes you think + this class introduces you to so many new concepts + ways of thinking. LOVE.

Quite possibly the strangest, nerdiest man I have ever met. He is great at starting discussions that really help with understanding the material but he will always tell you that some tribe that you have never heard of does things better.

He's bloody well nuts...focuses on the most minor, unimportant details of language...but very, very, very enthusiastic and willing to take a lot of crap, so not all bad. Lots of writting, but it was very easy, I got a B+ and never read any of the books.

Awful professor. You have to write stupid two page summaries each week, and then he humiliates one unlucky person each week by nitpicking on the language. He spent an hour talking about why one should write "Tiv" instead of "the Tiv."

FAR too much reading, and he constantly goes off topic in class and never returns to his original point. if you're an anthro major and you know your stuff, its an easy A... if you're not, you're probably lookin' at a B. beware: he'll get you w/ IDs on his exams that NO ONE can get.

Shipton is Harry Carey! He's hilarious, enthusiastic and wants everyone to learn. For this class, he requires a 2-page paper due every week. It can be a hassle, but as long as you stay on top of the reading, it's not bad. He does a decent job at explaining concepts. Exams are pretty basic.

So maybe he didn't know my name after I had him for three classes, and maybe he hadn't returned our midterms until the semester was almost over, but he managed to get me to change my major to Anthro. He's a good professor, wants you to do well and enjoy the class more then most...really nice man too

I took this class to fulfill a COM liber arts requirement and now I'm changing my major to Anthropology. Although he can be scatter brained at times, he knows his stuff. The tests aren't hard providing you do the readings and watch the movies.

He is out of his mind, I couldn't stand him. The class is way to much work, the lectures are boring and he never really talks about anything or gives you a straight answer. DO NOT take this class unless it is a requirement.
