Comment:
Professor Slattery is a tough grader and his lectures are pretty boring. Even if the exercises are finished early, he rarely lets class out early. In his essay writing class, I learned a lot but I was shocked when I realized he only accepted one absence, after that he deducts points.

Slattery is the best. "Creative Non-Fiction" is his version of Essay Writing. He's a stickler for grammar but really helps you understand it. He isn't handing out A's like candy, but if you show up and put in effort, you'll do fine.

Mr. Slattery is awesome and the class is interesting, but I love to write. 4 papers, 1 easy final, assigned readings here and there. He will help you if you ask for it and is really understanding if schedule conflicts arise. Tough grader though on paper content and grammar.

LOVED this class! This was my favorite class all semester. He helps you to understand how to write a good essay, and gives practical writing advice for future classes. This class was worth every effort. Take it if you get the opportunity!!!

TA class: Worst experience of my academic career. We read some useful essays, but his exams required us to memorize the first & last names & middle initials of all authors of every paper assigned (around 50), a distraction from true thought. I had former philosophy profs who were horrified by this "method." Nice guy. Hope he's changed approach.

Slattery is a great teacher. He really cares about his students and gives more time and energy than the average professor. I learned a lot from him about teaching composition. He has high standards, and I've really appreciated and respected him in the years I've known him. He's an awesome mentor-- smart and human and just downright cool.

He's a really nice guy, but the class was pretty useless. He focuses way too much on 'theory' and not enough on practical application. Every article we were forced to read was pretty much useless. My main gripe is that he is too "academic." But again, a super nice guy. Just sludge through the hideously boring articles the best you can.

Comment:
Pointless reading, little practical purpose to the structure and course content. Chooses favorites and panders to them from the first few weeks onward; considering that grad students get no credit toward their respective degrees, the class is nightmarishly dull and needlessly difficult, especially considering that it's full of busy work.

As far as his class is concerned, he is pretty much as 19th century as they come. Very old-fashioned. Very conventional. If you want to succeed in a teaching career, you might try doing the opposite of everything he says you should do. His style is appropriate for 4th graders, but probably not for college students.

Comment:
Slattery's approach seems rather backwards and backhanded. The "cumulative final" is pointless, as is most of the theory. I mistrust him for multiple reasons. For one, he says he doesn't count attendance as part of the grade, but he records it. Why? Also, he interrupts compulsively and listens to noone but himself. Takes everything too seriously.

The man cares, but he won't settle for anything less than everything you can possibly do. He wants to see his students succeed, but he won't give you any illusions, because they would hinder your true progress. Overall, he made a great impression on me because of his approach in and out of a classroom; he cares about the subject matter and the students, and those two are hard to find in many professors.
