Balakian is one of the most passionate, invested, and interesting professors I have had the pleasure of learning with. He is a leading scholar on the Armenian genocide - this course is an incredible opportunity to learn from one of the very best. Most important and engaging class I took at Colgate, by far. Tough but so worth it. Go to office hours!

He is not a clear instructor, and often goes on many unrelated tangents. He doesn't actually get to the readings most of the time. The worst part about the class was that it would often take over an hour of waiting outside his office for him to become available, even if I made an appointment beforehand. He's also unclear about paper guidelines.

Incredible man! Not a teacher for everyone, of course, not even many within the english major should take him. He is a very passionate man and offers powerful perspectives. Do not be afraid to participate, though, even if you are not fully understanding of the subject matter!

I had Balakian for the poetry-writing seminar. He's your typical poet, very chill, a bit spacey, extremely laid back. Didn't really care if you turned in work late. Often left comments on my work that were totally incomprehensible. Encouraged the class to own "Leaves of Grass," even if all we did was smoke it.

Sounds like he's talking out of his a.., but his credentials say he's a genius. I would only recommend this class if you are really and genuinely interested in poetry and you have done in depth analysis of poetry before. Otherwise, you're wasting your time.

Do not take a class with him if your ego bruises easily. And if that's the case, why do you want to be a writer in the first place? Balakian will make you a better writer if you stop crying and worrying and listen to the man.

Professor Balakian is a fantastic teacher. His lectures are fascinating and his knowledge of twentieth century poetry is inspiring. His classes are challenging, but will teach you to read and analyze poetry using a range of critical methods.

A tough grader, but makes you a better writer. My first impression was that he was a flake, but the more time you spend with him, the more you realize he's a genius. Take his class if you want to be a good writer or reader of poetry. It's worth it.
