I enjoyed Dr. Copeland and his teaching style. Go to class, he'll ask questions on the exams that you can't get from the book or slides. His expectations are reasonable. He curves at the end. Never any homework. 2 short papers that require minimal effort to make a good grade.

Copeland is great at making lectures feel like a conversation. It's easy to get comfortable with information learned in lecture, but don't expect to do well unless you read and internalize the material. The lab was well organized and helpful. There are 8 exams between lab and lecture which were all tough except for the first lab and lecture.

I liked Copeland. He's a very clear lecturer on the material and he makes the subject interesting in how well he explains it. He only gives tests: 5 total (4 + final; highest 4 grades count). His tests are all purely based on the lectures: 100% free response with 5-6 questions. Main problem is you'll die if you miss class, so don't miss class.

I'm not very good with science, but his test are over what he teaches in lecture. Many people drop after he mentions that he only has five test and each with five short answer questions. He is very lenient on grading your answers as long as you get the generally idea of what he is asking.

He's a great guy and is very passionate about his field of work but as a Philosophy major, science classes just don't come easy to me and aren't very interesting to me. If you're not a science person, this class isn't for you. I struggled a lot even though I went to every lecture. The only reason I passed was because of his weird grading scale.

He isnt as bad as many people make him out to be. He is very lecture heavy, so you would be required to at least attend class in order to get a good grade in class. His test are free response and he is very lenient when it comes to grading.

Dr. Copeland is what you would expect from a College professor. He doesn't give extra credit. However, if you go to class and pay attention to his lecture, you literally never have to read the book. I took him for both physical geology and historical geology and got an A both times just from attending the lectures. He curves pretty well too.

This is the worst professor at UH. He doesn't care about anything at all and gives absolutely no effort. He uses his 1980 lectures. His tests are completely random and he intends to trick you. The only way you will do well is if you read the textbook very very very thoroughly. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you have an option not to.

I would not recommend this proffers to anyone. His power points are outdated. He does not give ANY extra credit. Your grade is out of your 3 best tests from 4 plus a cumulative final. No paper reviews. The only "review time" is at the beginning of each class. In which you can ask questions you may have. That's it.

He's a pretty entertaining guy, but his tests are really tough. The things he talks about are interesting but the way he applies them in his tests are tricky and confusing like he's trying to make you realize you don't actually understand the material as well as you thought you did. Not a blow off class. Too much work for what it's worth.

Copeland is a little tough but not horrible. He has slides with notes that have pretty much everything you need to know for the tests, however, those are very long slides, and you will need to know EVERYTHING in it.. he doesn't do a very good job in making class interesting, so I found it a little difficult to keep up,dont take him if you want an A

This guy is lazy... very lazy. Find previous years tests, they make *great* study guilds. Made a B+ in his class and showed up for less than 1/4 of the lectures. Just do good in lab and the class will be a joke. He would hand out the test and my first thought would be "I've seen this before". Lazy teachers make for lazy students.

WILL NOT ANSWER EMAILS! Extremely rude. Rambles through slides. Read Heffren & OBrien. Tests are extremely hard and include flashing slides - difficult to follow... it was a challenge to go to class because he was so rude to students. I made a good grade but only by studying extremely hard with smart students.

I thought Dr Copeland was great during lecture. He taught the material in a clear manner. His tests were BS though. There would be multiple correct answers, "none of the above" was a common answer, and he was constantly trying to fool you on the exam. They were not a good indication of what you have learned. Also, 3/5 of lecture isn't petrography

He doesnt care about his students whatsoever, he is too busy doing his research. He makes huge mistakes during his tests. He doesnt write his own tests because he is a lazy pos. You cant avoid him and the department doesnt care how you feel either. I go now, good luck everybody else

I've read the comments on this professor and I disagree on some points. His lectures are drawn out and he sometimes takes a while to get to the point. Granted I have geology background but the class is overall not difficult. I basically studied for 10 hrs the day/night before, and should get an A. Bare min effort is enough, never showed up to class

I do not think copeland has a good grip on the subjects he teaches. Many of the students that did very well in the previous classes did not do well in his class. When you think you have a grip on what is going on, he fails you. In a nut shell, dude is all over the place.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He is extremely rude and it is very hard to pass his class. His tests are 5 short answer questions over 5-7 chapters. He does not give any hints as to what is on the tests, and no homework or other grades. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR!

Worst Professor I have ever had! I am an A student, and very disciplined in my academics and study habits; however this professor should not be teaching entry level courses. He cannot, or maybe just will not, come down to a Freshmen students knowledge level. His lectures do not help for tests, and he provides no reviews. Avoid at all costs!

Hard class if you don't put in the time. The tests are 6 short answer questions and you choose 5, he sometimes gives hints in lecture on something he just said could be asked on the test. Read the book and ask questions. He hates if the students just sit there and not ask anything.
