I would recommend this class (Guest Writers) with his because he is surprisingly chill in it. It is pass/fail and he just wants you to do the reading and share your thoughts.

Good side: Peter is a smart professor and brings deep insights through a good balance of lecture and discussions. Bad side: Peter indeed has a big ego, and can sometimes be a difficult grader. Just one quote from his final comments: "at the end he still struggled to attain a clear grasp of the underpinnings and nuances of the art of translation"

Peter is a swell teacher. This is my second semester with him and he is a genuine and funny person. His knowledge of poetry is substantial and he seems to have a great deal of passion for the material. Two thumbs up.

I have no idea what any of these other ratings are talking about. In this entire semester I have not heard Peter once be rude to a student. All the discussions we have in class are incredibly interesting, and the feedback on essays is generally helpful. Perhaps Peter used to be an ****, but if he was he's certainly changed.

Peter is very opinionated about analysis, I agree, but his comments in class make students get goosebumps. The poetry we have read thus far is pertinent and so enjoyable, I actually WANT to work hard for his class out of respect for his intelligence. If you are serious about him, he will appreciate your work.

I'm sorry, but I absolutely adore Peter Filkins. He was my professor for Fresh Sem I and I requested him for Fresh Sem II precisely because I love him so much. I know everyone hates him, but he's so well-intentioned and so bright. Just give him a chance. Rockers have the inclination to hate him purely because he's a bit outdated. Give him a chance

Peter doesn't deserve all of the flack he gets. Sure, he's not the best professor for everyone. He's not even that great of a professor. But he likes what he does, and if he cares about a text, it'll be interesting.

a knowledgeable professor. my goal is to know as much as he does about the syllabus by the end of the semester. however, since he's an arrogant fool, i'm going to have to ninja it out of him. prof. filkins does everything in his power to make learning difficult and irritating.

all i remember of discovery day class with him was that in a discussion about e. e. cummings, i propsed an idea and he went, "mmm.... no. AN-yway!" plus, when my friend wrote a poem wherein a tree grew in her palm, he commented with: "Is this really happening?" metaphor, anyone?

To put it simply, Filkins is a pompous ass. He refuses to accept any ideas other than his own on any poetry. His critiques are not helpful in least for revising a piece of writing. Frankly, the only decent part of his class is the peer review, because you actually get USEFUL feedback.

I saw Peter staring off into the distance one day, no doubt thinking of a new poem to write about the New England countryside. I pity the Workshop class he inflicts that one on... FOR A WHOLE DAY.

the man doesnt believe in playing the radio while driving because we as americans hear music too often and dont appreciate it. Music should only be listened to when you can give it your undevided attention. He's a tool.

Smarmy. Insults students for having different interpretations of a work than his. Has all the stereotypical insecurities and bad attitude of a poet without the bursts of inspiration.
