Comment:
Dr. Facchini is funny in lecture, but does not really care about students. He often tells students not to study in detail but definitely tests in detail and marks in detail. He posts his notes but they are copied and pasted paragraphs from the textbook. Not a great prof.

He has a habit at times of going off topic in lectures. The slides that he prepares can be confusing if notes aren't taken and he sometimes skips various slides to catch up to the material he has to teach. While there wasn't a textbook for the class be prepared to read up on some of the experiments that he talks about in lectures.

Awesome professor, likes to bring real-life samples of compounds discussed in class. He really cares about the class, and willing to help everyone succeed, small class size also helps immensely. Definitely one of the most interesting and best biology courses at U of C, a must-take before you graduate.

Dr. Facchini is a great lecturer, and provides very good notes to study from. On top of that .. you get to learn some very interesting topics in Biology 505. I strongly recommend this course to anybody whose degree is in biology. It may be the best biology course you take in your undergrad ;-)

No textbook, exams were straight out of the notes and application based rather than memorization. Puts a lot of detail in the notes that wasn't required on the midterm. Very helpful, funny and interesting lectures. Great class.

OMG! Goes on and on and on about his stuff without realizing half the class is asleep. He mumbles like he has some missing teeth. Notes are a mess. Does not care about student interest. He just not interested in teaching .... and it shows.

Also took BOTA 503 when it still existed with him. I believe he's not quite brilliant, but exceptional at organizing others to do research for him. He spends as little time as possible preparing for teaching however and in my opinion should be a research-only professor where he excels. People who are bored by something tend to be boring about it.

He only taought 5 lectures for this course and he was very confident and excited about his topic.. but it was way too complicated for the amount of time he had to teach. Rambled on about stuff we didnt even have to know which confused me

The best bio prof EVER. He will teach you about plants you never thought would be mentioned in a university. And why they are GOOD. He's hilarious as well and will tell stories about how he met this guy that wrote this paper and crazy things happened. Know your material, and you should because he's impossible not to listen to, and you will ace exam

Facchini was somewhat boring and his notes weren't that great. However, when he says study from the notes, he means it. The texbook is useful for gaining more knowledge and clarification, since his notes are point form and can be unclear. His midterm was supposedly much more difficult than the other lecturer, but I didn't find it so bad. Just study

With Dr. Faccini, it would all have to be about the notes. Face it, they're just horrible and when you go back to study from them, it's terribly hard to discern anything. It is almost required that you go to lecture so that you will be able to make some sense of the notes. As for the lectures...they are just really boring.

omg. not a good prof. in fact, quite a bad one. lectures are just endless powerpoints so boring and very useless. because of the note style you end up just sitting there listening to him ramble on and make not funny jokes. lecture were such a waste of time, tests asked stupid fine details barely mentioned in class. just useless

Looks a bit like an ape.Really intelligent man, loves his plants. However, this class was rote memorization and extremely boring-fell asleep almost every class.Even if you are completely lost, study LOTS a few days before the exam (use notes and text) as I did and you'll do fine.Lots of confusing terminology. If you work a little, an A is attainable.

I was expecting to be bored with plants and to my surprise, he was able to make plants interesting. His exam was straightforward, especially if you went to his review session. Notes were rather disorganized but the important things were in the textbook anyway. I certainly preferred his half of the course to the animal half.
