In a word - hilarious! He simply is. As a prof he loves to talk, he talks non-stop. Has some pretty strange opinions, but who cares. Repeat what he says in your essays and you will get an A.

1 Diagnostic short paper, 2 essays, no midterm or final. Optional 10~20 min presentation (depend if you have someone present after yours) Do that and your participation mark is pretty much secure. Assign reading every week but they are optional, you only need to read the ones you are going to write on. Class average high B+.

This man symbolizes what a university professor SHOULD be like. Incredibly engaging lecturer, and a flexible instructor which makes you want to attend class and push yourself to do the very best work you can. Absolutely recommended.

EASY CLASS ALERT!! He assigns great texts, read them if you can but you really only have to read the text you write your term paper about and the one he says will be tested for the final. Attend the classes, no attendance list but he somehow knows who comes and who doesn't. Annoying opinions but don't take them personally and you'll be fine.

I was very excited to take a class with Peter Petro due to all the things I had heard, but have to say that I was extremely disappointed. Teaches his own controversial opinions as if they were facts and loves the sound of his own voice. You will do well if you restate his opinion back to him.

Prof Petro lets you take away as much as you want from the course. You can learn a lot or little-it's up to you. He's a very entertaining lecturer, quite helpful if you see him after class and treats his students as colleagues. His approach is what university is all about!

I can honestly say this is the only class which I didn't study for the final. Very easy, decent grader, only one term paper and a final exam. Very funny during lectures, however, after class he seems to be unapproachable. He has this strange photographic memory that helps remember the students' attendance rates.

Dr. Petro, don't ever retire!!! The last of the truly greats!!! The breadth of his knowledge and scholarship is astounding. They don't make 'em like him anymore. Don't let his brusqueness throw you off -- one of the kindest professors ever.

He was a great instructor who tries to interest all students in the subject. I read all the texts over and over again because of the passion he inspires for them.

Petro is one of the best professors I've ever had--he really made my last year at UBC. His classes are as easy or as hard as you want them to be. I really liked the freedom. It's the only class where I've done reading AFTER the class was finished. A bit hard to talk to after class, though.

Petro is a daft professor. He goes into non-sequitor sentences throughout the lectures that seem to drag sometimes, but funny nevertheless. Oh, and you could fart and get a good mark in this class. Although the benefits are that you get to read and watch some good movies, and he's entertaining. But why take the class seriously when you dont have to

Prof petro is pretty awesome, a good lecturer, though he doesn't engage all that much with the class. i would recommend this class highly to anyone interested in russian lit, it's entertaining, and definitely worth the money you'd be spending anyway.

It's a good thing you don't have to go to class, because it's really boring. The only reason to take it is to boost your average. It was disgustingly easy and required almost zero work, but the lectures were SOOO boring. Bring your laptop, sit in the back and do more important work to make it worth your time.

class is entertaining...i loved the sarcasm too. prof. petro clearly knows his stuff...i just wish he'd pass some more of it on to his students...also, not helpful in terms of comments on written work...all in all, an average prof-certainly not UBC's best

He is a very amusing teacher but sometimes his antics are a little repetitive. Like others have said, he's not very engaging and he doesn't really like talking to students outside of class. Easy marker. Voluntary student presentations supposedly count for 30% of your mark but i never did one...still did well. Just show up to watch him perform.

nice enough while lecturing, but doesn't seem too interested in engaging students. a course where you don't do all that much work.
