Gates is one of the best profs at Laurier as far as I'm concerned. If you want to do well in her class she gives you the tools to do so. If you slack and don't care you won't do well. It's really that simple.

Dr. Gates is obviously really passionate about film. Her course, however, requires that you attend lectures and watch the movies...if not, you won't do well. She also loves calling people out for talking over her in lectures, which is hilarious because if you're paying for school, you should probably listen. She stresses that a lot.

Dr. Gates is organized and clear. Her lectures are easy and interesting to follow, and her slideshows are clear. However, she will call you out infront of an entire lecture if you are being noisy or talking to your neighbor. Course was decently easy. Overall, great prof. Would take her class again.

Not a very nice teacher. Also doesn't with questions regarding which material to study for the midterm and exam. Gives HUGE readings, I'm talking 80+ pages. Made us do pointless 2 page film journals after every movie we watched during screening. Assignments are pretty difficult.

I liked her. She's not my favourite film prof at Laurier (Dr. Spring all the way!)but she can be funny, and she chooses great movies. Her exams were very easy.

I loved her. She is completely brilliant and I think what some students might find intimidating is that she won't put up with people who are obviously in her class because they expect a bird course. If you take the class seriously and keep an open mind you shouldn't have a problem, but expect to devote a lot of time to this class.

Gates is a really good teacher. She really knows what she is talking about and still shows a lot of interest in what she is teaching. All her classes are never boring and when it comes to screenings, she chooses really good movies but at the same time, movies that can help you learn certain film skills.

She really scares me, but I like her. Ha, does that make sense? She's got strong opinions and isn't very approachable, but she's got a fun sense of humour and knows her stuff. And for the record, I LIKED Last Year At Marienbad. Lol, keep an open mind and don't go in expecting to watch typical pop culture films and you'll enjoy the class.

Can I say she is a annoying, you learn next to nothing in this class a complete waste of time. Expect to spend 2 hrs of lectures, 1 hr tutorial and 3 hr watching a movie every week. She treats her students like a high school class consisting of telling them to shut up and not posting slides because if she did there would be no point to go.
