Dr. Hyser is the BEST. In his class you learn how to research and write a research paper. By meeting with him often, you have the opportunity to form a good relationship with him. He is hilarious and super helpful every step of the research process. Highly recommend taking his class and getting to know him.

Dr. Hyser is THE BEST HIST 395 professor. I also took his Gilded Age course (also 10/10 would recommend ). HIST 395 is supposed to be hard, but Hyser makes it worth the work. The feedback he gives is incredible, and he really takes time to help his students. He will make you an incredible researcher and writer. You do real history in his classes.

GREAT class! He gets so excited about the topics he talks about that he keeps your interest. Funny man always making jokes! One of my favorite teachers at JMU! You earn the grade you deserve, he gives you all the material to be successful so if you put in that little bit of extra work you can get an A.

It doesn't matter what you take, it'll be the best class you ever take. He is by far the best professor I've had in any major or class. Hilarious, great lecturer, and truly cares about his students. Makes you want to pursue being a professor just so you can be like him! Missing out if you don't take his classes!

I loved Dr. Hyser's class, this class was on the Gilded Age in America. He made a subject that could be boring quite interesting. We had a lot of readings, & a lot of the time they felt very repetitive. Overall it was an interesting class & I would definitely take his class again!

Dr. Hyser is so helpful. 395 is generally a terrible class but if you have to take it, TAKE IT WITH HYSER. He structures due dates for sections of your paper, which is really helpful. He'll give you a bunch of opportunities to have him read your rough drafts, use them! I went to him a bunch of times and kept following all his corrections, got an A!

Best professor ever. If you get a chance to take him do it. Most thoughtful responses ever on work turned in. Captivating class lectures. Great sense of humor, very down to Earth. Easily the nicest professor on campus. Class requirements were not strenuous, based on weekly readings. Included precis', two book reviews and an abstract.

After 3.5 years at jmu, Hyser was my favorite professor. Never was too big on history, but i think this was my favorite class out of all classes taken because he made it so interesting. Also was always the quiet kid in class but he made it easy to talk in discussion. Pretty cool guy.

If you have to take 395 (aka you're a history major) take it with Hyser! He literally co-wrote the book. I was absolutely dreading this class and he made it survivable. You will work hard, but thats just the nature of the course. He helps you improve your research and writing skills immensely. One of the best professors I've had so far!

Hyser is the BEST teacher I've ever had! He is COMPLETELY fair, class is very interesting (and I never thought I would say that about a history class), his tests are incredibly fair, and there are only 2 essays. I loved coming to class with Hyser. He is so animated, and makes class fun. (great stories about his "worthless sister" too :) )

One of the BEST professors I've had a JMU!!! I took him for the dreaded 395 and he was really helpful! I hate writing papers (still do), but Hyser made writing the paper enjoyable. He learns everyone's name and he genuinely cares about his students (asking if every thing's okay when you're having one of "those days"). Take him for 395!

Seriously, AWESOME. I took him for 310 (US Business History) sounds awful, but it was one of the best classes I have ever taken at JMU. If you need to take 395, take it with him. I cannot reccomend any teacher more strongly for ANYTHING!

Hyser is one of the best professors i have had yet at JMU. His lectures are intense and interesting. This was NOT an easy class, but it was definitely worthwhile. His 3 "inspirations" (tests) are hard, lots of reading and a weekly precis. Extremely approachable, will remember your name. TAKE HIS CLASS

395 is one of the hardest classes at JMU, and if you have to take this class, take it with Hyser. Hyser knows history, and he will almost hold your hand, guiding you to a perfect paper. You just have to listen and do the work. There is no getting around 395, so if your going to do it, do it right, and take Hyser.
