Rein Staal is brilliant. His lectures are spectacular, and his knowledge on politics, philosophy, and history is unbelievable. He's also very friendly and can be funny at times. Lots of reading for his class, but not much more than what you would experience in most politics/history/philosophy courses. Highly recommend!

Really enjoyed this lecture/discussion class. Dr. Staal is one of the best professors at Jewell and he takes the time to get to know his students and he gives good feedback on papers. Dr. Staal is also a fair grader, but the student should also take the time to do the readings and take part in class discussions. If you are involved you can do well.

I've had a class with Staal before, but this class was disorganized. Lectures were all over the place. Discussions were actually lectures. The topics are not related to the relevant material he will test and quiz over. You do a lot of reading without discussing it. Rote memorization with little relevance.

Probably the smartest man I have ever met. While his lectures are a little flighty, I never questioned what was expected of me. I gained knowledge of the subject matter as well as other tidbits. Great professor.

brilliant man, wonderful teacher. the key to getting a good grade is to HAVE YOUR OWN IDEAS and take a genuine interest in the topic.Don't bother trying to b.s. him like your old high school teachers,or pretend to know more than you do. Be concise in your writing. THINK FOR YOURSELF, and maybe be a little controversial, and you'll do fine.

Really smart guy. Sometimes almost too smart. But he always helps you if you need it and can help to clarify things if you don't completely understand them. Be sure to get feedback on papers before you turn them in so you can get a good grade. Doesn't follow usual paper structure norms that you get used to in high school. Good teacher.
