Comment:
Unger is awesome, he's pretty laid back and very easy to talk to. The classes could be dry at times and a little disorganized but they were still helpful. For the first semester do the readings and for the second its not as important seeing as how everyone know everything already. Also read Germinal over Christmas, trust me.

Does not make any kind of sense whatsoever, doesnt have notes or any kind of visual aid to assist in class, doesnt prepare for and just pops out random words for 50 minutes, lecture is pointless.

Overall enjoyed the course and the prof. Heavy reading load would be the biggest complaint; however, exam and paper styles can be focused to exclude some of readings (e.g. choose 2 of 10 questions). Pre-Modern Economic History is actually more interesting of a topic than one might think.

If you like being bored, confused and left wanting... this is the prof for you. He lectures without visual aids, and has a monotone voice. He will not conform to popular teaching techniques - effective teaching techniques. Text book is all you need.. dont' waste your time coming to lectures.

Definitely knows his stuff, though is not bogged down in details for his lectures. Sit in the front for lectures, as his voice is soft and he tends to throw in fairly funny comments under his breath. His specialty is in the minute details, so he expects at the least that you know all dates and places for most historical persons/events.

Great prof, really funny. Although he works purely through oral discussion in lectures, he goes slowly enough for you to take pretty good notes. His marking is fair, that is to say if you do****ty work you get a****ty mark. Don't sit at the back, he's getting a bit old and his voice is kinda soft. Other than that he's a great prof.

richard unger is an excellent prof who knows his hip top to bottom. considering the dryness of the material i'm surprised the other reviewers were so unforgiving. i found his lectures to be well-structured and peppered with subtle humour. a class act.

SO BORING! He obviously knows what he's talking about but I could hardly sit in his classes. Not an easy marker and can be unclear about what he wants.

Nice guy, knows his stuff. Watching paint dry more interesting than his lectures. How about a couple of slides or overheads for crying out loud!

ovbiously knows his stuff, but he can be a little dry at times which doesn't help when dealing with a topic as dry as medieval history. while i wouldn't jump at the chance to take a class from him again i wouldn't avoid it like the plague either.
