He's a great prof and I loved class discussions. Great choices of readings. Tough to get a good grade if you aren't an English major but still worth taking to fulfill the lit req. He's very knowledgeable and friendly.

Attendence is mandatory for this class. If you consider yourself at least decent in engl, then you'll have to work for a 80+ mark as gooding is a harder marker than what I'm used to and compared to the other profs. He also crammed 3/5 assignments or "challenges" at the end of the term, which sucks if you have a lot of finals to study for.

Dr. Gooding does not care for his students and makes it abundantly clear if he does not like you. To survive his class you must show up and not miss one class and agree with his opinions on the text. DO NOT take his class if you don't have to.

The overall word to describe Rick and this course would be vague. No details as to how much of the readings to do for a week. No marks given until the end of March. No direction on what to study for the final. The focus on the class just hammers on similar dystopic themes but when reflecting what you learned, you can't quite figure it out.

Comment:
Dr. Gooding was a decent prof, and the class was enjoyable. For an English course, there wasn't much reading and plenty of time to do the assignments. My only complaint is that Dr. Gooding seems like an exceptionally picky grader - no paper can be 100% perfect in his eyes. He gives plenty of feedback on how to improve, however.

Gooding is one of the worst English profs i've had. He is not open to hearing and discussing interpretations/opinions that don't coincide with his own, and it is very clear when a student presents an idea he doesn't agree with. I had an experience with this prof where he would not discuss my opinion of a book he loved since I did not like it.

We read so many fairytales in his class but were never tested on our knowledge of them. Instead, he based all of our marks on writing essays and critical reviews and never gave clear criteria. I wish he would have taught us how to write an essay the way he wanted us to write it, instead of criticizing us on our lack of experience. Here to learn.

Gooding's class was a term of class discussions where the same "problematic" themes were harped on again and again. If you have ideas of your own/think for yourself, taking his class might frustrate you immensely. Reading material was great but he seems to be looking for everyone to be on his wavelength, or else he will criticize you/get sensitive

Gooding was the hands down, the hardest marker I've had. His comments don't say much besides pointing out grammatical errors or "word choice," but the actual mark is so much lower than what you would want or expect. His lectures are engaging, but I feel like it's hard to improve in his class because you don't know what he actually ever wants.

I normally don't understand how to interpret poetry or look for underlying themes in the story, but he really helps you find the patterns and eventually I was able to find some on my own. He also points out a lot of heat you need to learn for the subject so for the grades it'/ not that hard

Rick Gooding is a prof who is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about the readings that he assigns, and if you align with his analyses and opinions, you'll have an easy class. However, if you want to contribute novel ideas and expand discussions, expect him to be rude, less lenient on grading, and checking your attendance.

WRDS 150 is boring, but Rick was fine. He was more interested in the material then we were, and he droned on a bit and was sometimes a tad bit condescending, albeit unintentionally. Great feedback. See him in office hours if you're struggling. Super friendly and is able to help you improve your writing. 5 assignments + final. Need to go to lectures

Hardest wrds prof at ubc. His assignments seem clear and his feedback will say you did great yet you get a low mark for some small thing he disliked. He puts down students as if they are not as intelligent as him and constantly boasts about the great contributions he is making to knowledge (he studies children's books). Dosent want to give any A's.

Dr. Gooding is a very educated and experienced person in his field. His course is very well-planned and the readings in WRDS150 class were quite academic but that's not really his fault. He encourages you to go to his office and gives marks for participation (attendance). People call him a tough grader but he was pretty okay with me. Pretty clear.

I like Dr. Gooding's lecture. He gives very clear instruction, and he gives some extra points. Sometimes when there is not much to say, he dismiss us earlier. Anyways, he is pretty helpful and not much homework.

Professor Gooding is a very hard marker. I am a fourth year student and have had my fair share of tough markers, but Professor Gooding takes this to a whole new level. He will give you pretty good feedback and then still give you a low mark. He's a nice enough guy, just has very high expectations of the students.

The class average was 60%. Assigns several papers with exacting criteia that he will dock you full letter grades for not following exactly. At one point he told me i would have gotten a A on a paper but moved me to a B- for using an improper running head. He is teaching a mandatory class and massively reducing people's averages. Beware group work.

Prof Gooding was pretty chill most of the time (didn't mind when I fell asleep a couple times), but for a good mark, you wanna be able to follow with what the course demands, and show up to class -- he'll probably like you better that way too. Projects were fair, spaced out, extensions too! (no 20 page+ article summaries needed like other sections)

He appears to be a nice professor although he has exact standards. His assignments can be very trivial and annoying. This course itself is mandatory but its usefulness is debatable.
