What a delight -- a UofT prof interested in students and not inflating his own ego. He made me think, took an interest in my ideas, and pushed me very hard. Would love him in a seminar, but even in this large lecture he was stimulating and engaging. Too bad he is teaching so little these days.

Great lecturer - and I'm really picky. Very approachable, unlike Wayne.

One of the better profs I've had at UofT. Lectures are clear as can be, outlines very helpful. works well with the TAs.

This was demanding, but a really worthwhile course. Unlike the first term, the prof pushed students to think about big questions that still resonante today. I would take anything he taught. The labour and working class materials -- and the stuff on African Americans -- was new and put across in a stimulating way

Comment:
Far inferior to professor Wayne, he got bogged down in labor material, and didnt lecture well for note taking purposes. Skipped WW1+2. For the last essay assgn he didnt order enough copies of an obscure book for all of the people in the class and when asked about it didnt care. I would never take another class of his. Wayne started the year so well

So boring, fetishes about labour and taught American History without mentioning WWI or II! He just blathered on about labour labour labour. Boring and disorganized

There is a lot of reading and actual engagement with the material is required, but this is probably the most worthwhile class I will ever take as an undergrad. Prof Halpern is encouraging and does an amazing job at guiding students through the material.

Too bad it took till my final year to find a class that NEVER failed to be stimulating. Credit -- most of it -- goes to Rick Halpern. A prof who cares about learning and creating an environment where all students feel their opinion is valued.

Professor Halpern is enthusiastic about AmStudies, but because of this, he tries to squeeze too much into this seminar course. If you prefer to gloss over material rather than engage closely with it, you'll be alright. Warning: a frustrating course for English students.

This course was hard -- that is challenging and demanding. Yet Rick Halpern made it one that I didnt mind working for. He is incredibly helpful and interested in the learning process. He always welcomes opinions and divergent views, even when they are very different than his. Great!

had him for summer school -- in Siena, of all places -- and it couldn't have been a better, more positive classroom experience. He know his stuff. He presents it well. He involves the group. He gives plenty of individual attention. And it's fun. wow.

The most enjoyable course I've taken in 3+ years here, utterly out of the ordinary. One thing that made it so amazing, aside from the material, is the Prof's attitude toward learning and the students.

Not as good as Wayne is. His lectures using the slides really distracted me. Quite helpful to all his students(from what I heard) but he didn't strike me as anything special.

I've just finished History271. It wasn't easy -- but it was one of the best learning experiences I've had in three years here. I especially liked the way the Prof coordinated his efforts with the TAs and the way he carefully handled questions. Halpern

What an exemplary teacher! That's right...teacher. A pretty hard thing to find at the university level. A model of extreme clarity with a contagious interest in subject matter. Teaches a survey course the way its supposed to be taught!
