He really knows what hes talking about when it comes to the industry but his class is unclear. He was very unprepared when it came to giving assignments. His tests referred to a lot of things he said in class but I dont actually think he ever said it in class. Tests are very unlike the notes. attendance required to pass

Avoid if possible. His class is incredibly boring and his attendance policy is ridiculous. His notes and exams have no structure and use tricky wording. The only points for the class are the quizzes and the final project and exam. Unless you have extensive background knowledge in Bca, don't take his class.

Man I don't know why Sykes has such a high rating on here... He's not terrible, just not that good - his powerpoints are a joke, for a guy that teaches writing broadcasting copy there's like 2 grammatical errors per slide, which consist of like 2 sentences each. I find his marking to be random as well.

BCA 515 is a very easy class. Professor Sykes has a great knowledge of sports broadcasting, and all of the projects are pretty easy. Final exam can be a little tricky though. Don't buy the textbook because you'll never use it. Great class if you love sports!

This class is not for the lazy or those looking for an easy A. Go in, pay attention, learn your stuff, do it right, and help your classmates. It'll pay off. Sykes has a wealth of knowledge to be tapped, so take advantage if you can. Also, he's fun to make laugh. Crack a joke every now and then ... great laugh!

A smart man who will sharpen your writing skills immensely. Was recommended to me by Will Anderson (who deserves smilies of his own) as "The best prof. in the department." Has the voice of Morgan Freeman and the sweaters of Bill Cosby. You can't go wrong.

Comment:

A good prof, but the class itself is very demanding. Prepare to spend up to 8 hours in the news room on days you are a line producer and have an open schedule before your lab. Seems to be a bit more focused on making sure stories do not have to be credited to other sources as opposed to improving the news cast based on the techniques we learn.

If you are a IPR major, do not take this class!!! Sykes treats the PR students like crap and gives automatic A's to the BCA students. You learn nothing of importance in this class and spend 3 wasted hours a week being bored out of your mind.

RICK SYKES IS WITHOUT A DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS AT CMU. THE BCA DEPARTMENT IS LUCKY TO HAVE HIM. HE IS VERY NICE AND HAS A LOT OF OVERALL EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE IN THE AREA HE TEACHES. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING ONE OF HIS CLASSES
