Rob is the man! Super nice guy, very approachable and funny. MUSI 1200 though is just a cluster. The concepts are super abstract and bizarre, 8 months and 9 credits later I had attended maybe 30% of lectures and still passed with an A because if you just come up with some artsy concepts for the final essay you'll do great.

Comment:

What most people don't get is that the course material is meant to be vague. The purpose of 1200 is to open you up to a whole world of philosophical/historical/political musical concepts, as a way to whet your appetite. Simms is an fantastic lecturer who makes navigating these concepts easier. Definitely taking his upper year courses.

In the start I didn't understand a lot of the concepts in his Musics and Cultures class, but near the end, it was almost sad to leave. Very eye opening, you'll learn a lot about yourself, lots of flexibility with assignments and exams. Challenging at times, but worth it in the end.

Considering the range of topics that needed to be covered in a 9 credit course, Rob executed his teachings in a very eccentric yet palatable way that got to the heart of the matter. Definitely the best teacher I've had thus far at York, I will miss his class and his ideas and were so inspiring.

The material in the class was godawful but he managed to make it as interesting as he could and for that I have the utmost respect for him. Funny guy, really into what he talks about, really have no complains about him. The material on the other hand, well....I'm sure you'll see for yourself

Fantastic course and fantastic professor. Simms is clearly interested in what he teaches. His teaching method is a bit abstract-random, so if you don't deal well with tangents, beware; I on the other hand loved the occasional change in subject and learned a LOT from this class. He is quite willing to accommodate most issues which is also helpful.

I *loved* going to class when he was teaching (despite the early hour of 8:30. that's just wrong in Uni) He kept things lively, interesting. He didn't jump around with the material. I learned so much, and found it all fascinating. :) The only thing about this class was no text book I found that really hard. Still, Rob did a great job to overcome
