He is a horrible teacher. I took this class as an elective because I'm not very good at writing essays. The quizzes he gives are on the content of the readings, not on the grammar and structure. I learned nothing about essay writing. He will only give you a good mark if you write what he wants you to write. What a useless class.

He will expect you to give him the answers he wants - but he gives them to you prior to any test or exam! He will also give you a full mark on quizzes if you did all of them, no matter if you had bad grades on them or not. He is able to quote many poems by heart : he KNOWS what he's doing. I took ENG111 with him as well and enjoyed it.

Yes, he's a bit strange. But if you go to class, take good notes, overlook the weirdness and actually PARTICIPATE, you're golden. He pretty much feeds you answers in class-- so you HAVE TO GO! I got a 90+ in his course. Not a bad guy, really, just awkward and behind the times socially, as well as technologically. Humor him, and do yourself a favor.

He laughs at a lot of things that aren't funny in the poems (like death). He is VERY specific about what he wants, and if you don't do that, then you can't get a good mark. You have to put aside your own ideas and give him what he wants.

Professor Brown is overly criticized. He is a smart, witty man who knows the game and refuses to be bored or boring, he continuously seeks to stimulate and provoke. Poetry can be mind-numbing, but he doesn?t allow it to be. He takes a lot of risks, and he ought to be more appreciated as a veteran, and leader of English Lit.

Not that anyone going to bishop's in the English Major has a choice, but if you aren't an english major DO NOT take his course. Brown is dry, and the only way to pass his class is if you mirror his ideas, your ideas do not count in his class.

He is a horrible person. I feel uncomfortable and violated at the end of each class. He takes things too far and make inappropriate comments towards students. He doesn't really teach anything either. All he does is tell you to read the textbook then he quizzes you on it EVERY DAY.

Prof Brown spent the entire term hitting on students and making inappropriate comments towards female students as well as referring to his sexual preferences and experiences. How is Bishops still allowing him to teach? Regardless of his inability to instruct, his attitudes in the classroom should be enough to keep students away.

Poetry- what a waste of time. Brown declared to the class first day that he was only teaching poetry because he had a guilty conscience-GREAT! Found him to be very Chauvenistic and self-absorbed. If you mimic exactly what he says, you will succeed in this class.A waste of money- All i learned from this man was how degrading some male teachers can b

Looks for students to regurgitate his opinions, in some sort of bizarre validation that makes independent learning impossible. Attendance in class is highly recommended, since you'll have to know his opinions to spit them back on the page. Unless required, avoid his classes.

Yes, Brown wants to hear his own opinions repeated back to him. However, this makes him so easy to please. There is no guess work and his expecations are clear. I took a second class with him just because he's easy to do well with.

I took Approaches to Poetry with Professor Brown in first year, and lasted three weeks. According to Prof. Brown, there's only ONE approach to poetry, and it's HIS. This course wasn't about analyzing poetry, it was more a "guessing game." If you could magically divine his opinion and spout it back, you were right. Otherwise, you'd fail.
