his teaching style is to put the short stories you read up on the board and read them to you, making analysis comments as he goes. personally this drives me nuts, but it might work for you. I just go to class to get the attendance grade and then do research on my own for the papers. one short presentation and 4500 words of writing on 6 stories

He's such a nice guy and is clearly very passionate about the subject, but the class is very irritating. He expects you to spend as much time and energy dissecting the books as he does, but it's a Gen Ed, and we don't do this for a living. Graded by a couple essays (which he grades harshly) and 2 presentations. Grades are not posted until the end.

Super nice guy, really knowledgeable, loves what he teaches. He's always cracking jokes (usually puns) and doesn't seem to care at all if they fall flat. He's really upbeat all the time too. You write essays about at least 4 of the books, totaling 4000 words (not all due at the same time) and there's one group presentation. I'd recommend him!

He's so friendly and really loves what he's teaching about. If you have decent writing skills then it's a pretty easy A, you have to write 2 2000-word essays throughout the semester and one group presentation; there's no tests. He does take attendance but you're allowed to have phones & laptops out during class.

Great professor! Dr. Goebel is really friendly and laid-back, but you still manage to learn a lot from the class (GER400 helped my speaking skills improve a lot). His grading criteria is pretty unclear, but if you show up to class you'll get at least a B.

Very passionate for the class and what he teaches! Extremely nice. No tests or quizzes, just one huge paper or multiple papers that add up to 5000 words. But if you procrastinate, it will do you no good. Surprisingly a tough grader on papers.

Professor Goebel is a great person. I just finished taking his class during maymester & this was by far one of the easiest classes I've taken at JMU. He reads & explains the stories aloud. You're required to write a min of 5000 words on atleast 4 of the stories. I got an A- in the class & Im not the best writer. I would take his class!

Great professor, very enthusiastic! Just finished this class for Maymester, and it was really easy. He reads the stories aloud and has the class dissect the meaning. Only assignment was to write 5,000 words minimum (1 essay or multiple short essays). He was really helpful with essay topics. Answered emails quickly.

Professor Goebel is a sweet guy. Thought he was going to be easier than he was, but turns out he is really nit-picky with grammar and using certain tenses (such as the passive) if you consider yourself a good writer, take this class. it will be easy for you.

Best. Professor. Ever. Took him for summer (gen ed requirement) and it was seriously the best class ever. I'll be a senior this fall and he is seriously one of the best professors i've ever had. Super easy class, but even still I was totally interested in what we were doing in class. Def take this class!!!!

First of all, Goebel is one of the nicest professors I've had at JMU. He's very approachable and always in a great mood. Awesome dude. As for the class, you read the book, write a paper, then end.

Christmas Ham- loves to joke, which can go too far but easily forgiven. Far more intelligent than the average person in almost every topic. He flaunts it too much sometimes but nit in a belittling way. Will talk with you about anything. Needs to stay focused & could have a heavier work load. This is a lazy class to take, and I did not learn much.

The most enthusiastic man you'll ever meet at 8AM. Take him for an easy A/B. Speak up in class and I assure you that it won't be as boring as previously said. Only four papers and a group presentation. Dr. Goebel is most intelligent professor I've had at JMU.

Goebel is a real good guy but his class can be boring at times. The class itself is as easy as you want it to be. He assigned 6 papers all year (2 pages) and only counted 4. no tests, no quizzes, and some reading but he goes over everything you read the night before so just bring a notebook and he summarizes it page by page. real good guy though.
