I learned more from Mr. Hathaway, then I have ever learned in an English class. I feel as though I know more about English from this one class, then all the classes I have taken before. Be warned! He will call out your mistake, and he will do so in front of the class, but he seems to care, and is good at teaching. Be ready to work hard for an A.

If you don't like being put on the spot or embarrassed by your professor don't take this class. He is not interested in being respectful to students and treats people poorly. He spews insults and often seems to thrive on making people uncomfortable. He also makes you feel stupid if you are unclear on an answer. I would never take a class of his!

He's an old school English professor. Be prepared to write 5-6 essays per semester. Pay attention in class. He's passionate about his work. He's tough but fair, and will work with you if you need help. Makes you think for yourself. You'll fail if you can't devote 5-10 hours per week to his class, or if you can't take constructive criticism.

He was very rude and likes to pick on people who doesn't pay attention. Instead of reading your paper privately, he likes people to read their essays to the whole class.

If you don't like public embarrassment, don't take his class. Everytime there is a small writing assignment (like a paragraph or a thesis statement), he doesn't privately grade it and then talk to you about it one on one. He reads them to the entire class and then criticizes you. He's pretty unclear about certain assignments, but overall not bad.

Comment:

First semester and one of my first classes at century college. He laid everything out for us right away, explained the requirements, fair with how we should handle everything. Each paper was graded fairly with nice opinions on what we should change to become a better writer. A humble person with a good attitude for having to teach a basic HS class.

His lectures are tough to focus on, and each class is all just him talking. He grades you on like 5 things throughout the semester and his tests are about 40 questions ALL SHORT ANSWER (almost impossible) and he also grades his essays really toughly! Getting an A seems hard to achieve from this guy. He is a wise man though, I have respect for him .

Hathaway treats his class like they are a bunch of highschoolers. He yelled at my classmate who got up to use the bathroom, and made the whole class sit and wait for her to come back. He seems to make things up as he goes. He is always late but if you are late he will shame you in front of everyone. I will never take his class again

Mr. Hathaway, overall, was a good instructor I thought. I took his class over the summer and we learned about poetry, which was very interesting. He's pretty straight to the point. Gave out 3 essay assignments only, most was lecture. If you attend his class, participate in groups and do the work, you'll pass.

I took his Composition 1 class over the summer and was overall a good experience. Attendance and class participation is a must if you want a good grade. His assignments are 800 to 1000 word essays and looks for sentence structure errors. He is willing to answer questions and clarify any confusion. Use the writing center. They do wonders!

I liked him as a teacher, but he is not for everyone. Attendance is a must. He talks a lot in class. Some times it can be interesting. Some times it is very winded. As long as you work with him he should be fine with you.

Attendance is a MUST! Tests come from in-class lecture and readings. There is a LOT of reading in this class - plan to read 100 to 200 pages a DAY! Good teacher, even though he is a strict grader.
