You might leave any particular class feeling like you learned nothing, but if you follow the sheet of 27 and stick through his wild stories, you will leave the course feeling like you have truly improved as a writer and a reader of literature. Love the man.

Professor Levine is a nice enough guy i suppose, but I definitely did not mesh with his teaching style. I personally prefer a more structured course and professor, and he clearly comes in with nothing prepared and just goes into tangents that are interesting but difficult to follow. His grading varies widely.

My admiration for Prof. Levine runs deep. I've taken two courses with him and each time he has been very interesting and engaging in lecture, and very encouraging in office hours. He will call on you to answer questions in class, but don't be afraid to admit that you don't quite understand or have an answer.

Levine is a complicated professor. He can be intimidating, but also very good natured other times. Get on his good side by talking a lot and reading carefully. Papers will be graded harshly, but you will feel like you accomplished something when you finish a Levine class. Check your grammar and spelling or you will fail everything

This is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He spends half his class talking about random latin words that do not pertain to the class. He also is not very helpful with his comments, often short and not constructive. After not doing well on the first paper, I went to office hours. He was vague and not very helpful. Avoid him at all costs

Professor Levine was not who I expected him to be. Initially, he seems intimidating, but he's extremely good-natured and loves to joke with his students. He engages in heavy discussion, and often calls on students at random, so always be prepared for class. He's a tough grader, but he really brings out the best in you academically.

Professor Levine was one of the far better professors that I've had thus far at BU. Many of my classmates complained about how he didn't, "stick to the readings", but I loved in class discussions. Hard grader, but if you show him that you're dedicated, he's incredibly fair. Take him!! :)

I took Prof. Levine twice, and have to say that he alone pushed me to become a better writer and thinker. I loved going to his class, he is extremely funny and a bit zany. Sure, he's tough, but if you want to major in English, I mean that you actually enjoy English and writing papers, then there is no one better.

I had Bob Levine over 30 years ago. I found him to be fair but tough. I enjoyed his classes so much I ended up taking a total of four courses. Started off with a C finished with a B+. And all grades were earned. Take him if you want a challenge!!

Yes, there is the dreaded Sheet of 27, but you have to love this guy. He has great sense of humor, which allows him to breathe new life into Beowulf, Herbert's poetry, and other texts that we would not read unless we were assigned. A fair grader (although I would like more comments). Plus, he's a polygamist.

Hard, but worth it. Will give you a heart attack, but will also make you learn. Gave me a negative score on a paper, but re-graded after a re-write. Reasonable.

Best teacher I've had at BU. Very passionate about material and extremely interested in helping students and enriching education. Can learn a lot from him, especially how to write well. He may be very demanding, but it's worthwhile. I want to take more courses with him!

The two people who posted below me are morons. Levine is the best, plain and simple. He's not for stupid people, end of story. To the person who thinks his list of 26 is "pompous"; hey, guess what jerk, he wants his students to WRITE PROPERLY.

He's still alive? Wow...I took his class about ten years ago. A very intense individual. As an English teacher, I shared his 26 rules with many of my classes as an example of how crazy, pompous, and fanatical college professors can be. But he's removed from the real world so it's all good. A smart person who has made a difference...

STEAR CLEAR! I dont know what others saw in him... I thought he was an unfair, prickly ****. VERY unhelpful and so boring I frequently fell asleep. not an easy grader.. god forbid you use "the reader" in an essay = instant F. As I wrote in his eval: I wouldnt recommend this course under Levine's instruction to ANY of my friends, only my enemies.
