Very demanding, but he'll make you a better student. Don't register if you don't want to work, and don't even think about it if you don't want to attend class. Good TA this year too. Both very helpful, always available for students who are willing to work.

Yes Dr.Young is a very tough marker, and his class was the most difficult I've taken in my 3 years at the UofW, but he's also one of the most helpful profs I've ever had and I'm glad I took his course. He really sets the bar for university level work and is challenges his students, but cares a lot that they progress. Great prof if you're up to it.

He’s a hard marker but he’s very intelligent, he cares about his students and their university experience. I’m so lucky I had him in first year because he gave me the preparation for university that high school didn’t. He has clear expectations and as long as you meet them and work hard, you'll do fine.

This professor is extremely helpful. Dr. Young is a tough marker but he is ALWAYS willing to help his students. If you make a sincere effort and pay attention to his tips then you'll be fine in his course. You can really tell that he loves teaching, history and that he cares about his students!

What a disappointment! Dr. Young's academic mindset ceased developing about 40 years ago. Those interested in military history and B grades will love him- for those who want to discuss serious intellectual ideas, do NOT take this course. Also, his marking system is nothing short of dictatorial.

Stay away! If you have any trouble with writing or using footnotes and endnotes i suggest find another prof. This is by far the worst class i have ever taken. Its boring and for me personally i lost interest in this class and subject.

His grades are 5-10 points lower than what any other prof would give. He also puts more work into his grading, and more effort into helping students improve, than anyone else I've had. One of the three best profs I've studied with. His marking scares off people who could learn a lot from him.

Worst Prof ever! Arrogant, rude, impatient, reads from his own texts every class, hard marker, oblivious to what's going on in his field and just an all around boring ****. Just write boring military history papers and you might get a B (if you're exeptionally talented).

fairly hard marker and somewhat boring. takes real interest in the progress of his students and is available for help all the time. likes to use french as much as possible to demonstrate his intellectual witt and high degree of sophistication :-)... not a bad class to take.

This man is the worst professor i've had in my 4 years at the U of W. He has killed my love of history. His expectations are unrealistic and he brings his own agendas to the classroom. He grossly undervalues grades in a quiotic effort to reduce the grades at the u of w. Don't take his classes.

Clear expectations and high standards: two marks of a great professor, and Dr. Young has these qualities in abundance. Also very active in promoting student activity on campus via the History Student's Association. Very distinguished, but knows how to have a good time.

This man is the reason I have a history degree. Bit old school, high marking standards, but he cares about your university experience, and not just in class. Also well known academic outside of Winnipeg (killer reference letter). Make the effort to see him in his office about assignments.

After taking his class and hearing a number of accounts from other students, prof. Young has an amazing ability to reduce previously straight A students to tears with his brand of marking. Yet, he's such a nice man, and honestly seems devoted to students, you can't hate him!
