Good class but your grade is mostly determined by two papers, which are tough because it's graded based on his opinion of your paper which is rough. I wish there had been more opportunity to prove that we knew what we were doing

Good in class but I didn't feel like he graded fairly on papers, I was on track to get n A but he graded my final paper differently than he graded the other paper in the class.

You have two big papers and a few other small assignments after every class. He is extremely opinionated but overall a good guy and cares about what he says. If you do all your work it should be and easy A.

Gottlieb is one of the best professors I've had at WPI. He's engaging, has clear expectations and really makes you think. He is adamant about where he stands on certain topics, but it's not like he won't allow you to disagree. Just be able to explain yourself. He learns the names of everyone who is willing to speak up and is very friendly.

Presents an interesting set of ideas that tend to challenge the way most students think. Embracing these ideas is not necessary, but the he expects students to support any claims they make, and will rightfully do his best to pick apart these arguments. While he can be very critical in class, he grades fairly as long as you follow the instructions.

Some may claim he teaches only his own opinions, but what kind of phil. prof. would he be without passion? Great at what he does, very knowledgeable... Really makes you think about the world. If you want a mindless class, skip this one. But if you don't mind a little effort (minimal hw, 2 short papers), this class is honestly an interesting break!!

I thought he was pretty good. We had to write two short papers and he doesn't assign grades. I just got an A for writing them. He seems really smart and he's a nice guy. I'm taking him again for my inquiry seminar about the meaning of life. I like him more than other philosophy professors i've had. No textbook but we read one of his books.

He preaches his own views every class and ignores others viewpoints. Will shut down any attempt to refute his arguments and will be disrespectful towards those that show their opposing views.

I think he is a great professor and the reason im going to do my depth in philosophy, he is a really nice guy. He might seem tough at first but his classes are engaging. I really recommend him, he doesn't make you read to much and actually influences the way you think!

This class was a huge mistake, all he does is throw his positions at you and expects you to take them as your own and if you do not agree your grade terribly suffers, he has no helpful commentary what so ever, and shows no respect at all. It is his way or no way. So i would much rather be stoned to death than have to sit through this class again.

Professor Gottlieb is incredibly well organized and very clear about his expectations. This class was unlike any other I have taken at WPI and I recommend it to anyone interested in the environment.

Professor Gottlieb was my second college philosophy teacher. I started a sufficiency project with him in 1981, which I have not yet completed. Thirty years later, he still makes me think. While we do not always agree, he has never disrespected my well thought out beliefs. Disagree, but defend your point of view well and you will earn his respect

Pushes his own point of view on students. Other opinions are automatically wrong if they do not agree with his. This professor needs to learn to be a professor more than a preacher. Students are supposed to have their own thoughts. It's a philosophy class, after all.

the first book by hume is unbearably boring. the lecture is mostly gottlieb talking. he'll sort of attack you verbally if he strongly disagrees. don't forget to do the summaries and papers.

Keep an open mind and do the reading. If you can't comfortably do all of the reading, at least skim it, and write a summary (no summaries = no pass). He's a fun guy and has a good sense of humor. Recommended.
