Your grade is based on a midterm, final and an optional extra credit paper of 5 pages 1/10 of your grade. After the first exam, I realized you needed to combine his notes with the textbook for clarification. Used the PPT with over 300 slides, he posts his class notes and the book to study for the final. The final was a little less biological.

This professor is extremely brilliant and knows/ loves what he is teaching. However, this class is very difficult and heavily focused on biology. The one gradesaver is he scales his tests a ton and offers an extra credit paper

This was the most painful class to sit through. He wrote his own book so he lectures right out of it and he writes his lectures out instead of using powerpoint. Only graded on midterm and final. Did not learn what I expected to out of this class. I recommend avoiding this class and professor at all costs.

Don't take this class unless you're very interested in the topic. The lectures consist entirely of him writing on the board and it's almost impossible to pay attention. You're only graded on two exams, but he curves really heavily which is nice.

One semester with him was fine but I don't think I'd willingly subject myself to that again. He is a wonderful guy, very knowledgeable and obviously smart, but his lectures are a tough. He doesn't use slides, just draws on the board and lectures at you. Can be hard to stay with it for an hour and 15 mins. Played a lot of solitaire during class.

It's clear Buck enjoys what he teaches and is knowledgeable about it but he has the most monotonous voice ever and lecture is terrible. Only two exams, they're based off of what he writes on the board during class. The first exam there was an 18 point curve and was very biologically based. No structure to the class whatsoever and never used book.

Ross is great as a person, but as a professor, not so much. He just rambles and writes things on the board without explaining them (no PowerPoint's); thus you need to go to class and it's EXTREMELY boring. Like painfully. Material is 85% microbiology, which can get confusing. And your grade is based on 2 exams, that's it.

Literally the hardest, most boring, most frustrating class I've ever taken in my college career (I'm a senior). He just babbles the entire lecture and writes confusing diagrams and short notes on the board. No lecture slides. Only grades are two tests and one optional paper. Provides a study guide but it was over 200 slides and VERY confusing.

Whatever you do, go to class! No slides, no HuskyCT...just what Buck writes on the board. It's a boring lecture style but really interesting material. Only 2 exams make up your whole grade with an optional extra credit research paper. If you keep up with the lectures, you'll do fine. Buck knows/loves what he's teaching.

He's an old-fashioned professor; he does not have lecture slides, he just talks and occasionally draws things on the board. It is a very biologically-based class and can be boring at times. However, I enjoy it and it's clear that he knows his stuff. He is also always willing to clarify for you.

If you want to understand how the process of communication works all the way down to the biological level take a class with Ross! To get the most out of his classes you will need to take responsibility for your learning more than in most classes. Do NOT take this class for an easy A. But if prepared and interested he will rock your world.

Awful to learn from.lectures with NO sense of flow or organization whatsoever, making notetaking nearly impossible. Basically just rambles arbitrarily for the entire class period. Does not provide powerpoint slides with key points and doesn't use HuskyCT. Draws bizarre diagrams on the board with no meaning. Also more of a biology class than Comm.

Don't put yourself thru torture. He wrote the book and his unorganized lectures are painfully monotone and hard to follow with his doodles. The class isn't THAT interesting. He's brilliant, just not a great professor.

Absolutely brilliant; a true gentleman scholar. UConn is so lucky to have him. His stories are the best! His material is fascinating, but the lazy need not enroll. He makes brain research even more interesting.
