I would have liked to hear from the TA or the professor... Felt like I was alone in this course. Other than that, focus on the objectives and review questions and you can ace the class (not easily, however). DO NOT underestimate this class. I'm a President's Honour Roll student and had to spend more time on this 100 level course than my seminars

Ryan wasn't a bad prof. He just looks for too much details in the exams. And I don't learn much from going to lectures, but his slides are pretty easy to follow. He also had a great choice of TA- brent (best TA ever)

power points are crucial. everything is on canvas, so it's very accessible. clear explanations and has a lot of information, but workload is 100% manageable. tests can be specific, but points are given and taken fairly. only had to buy a lab manual for the course, which was nice

Lectures were pretty much word for word to the slides he provided, but the slides were super in depth and had everything we needed to know. Lecture time was good for learning and hearing the material in addition to making your own notes, which is necessary!! It's a lot of material. He was super helpful and friendly during office hours.

His lectures add nothing to the notes he puts on canvas, if anything lectures detract from the class because he skips over slides so fast you don't know what's relevant and what he just didn't have time for. This is the most in-depth "intro" class I've ever been in, so good luck if this is all new to you. Doing both bios did not help.

The only problem I have with Ryan is that he doesn't manage his time well while lecturing. Often it can be noted that he paddles along a certain topic but speeds along the next because of time constraints. I would recommend that he slow down with the topics and allow students to digest the info as this is a very broad course and covers a lot of...

Took BPK140 from him this semester, good teacher but lectures are dull and boring. Only had the midterm so far and was kind of difficult (too much detailed info asked). Weekly quizzes in tutorials are helpful to keep up with the content. Be ready to memorize lots of definitions. His choice of TA is really great. Best TA--Dominic!

To be fair, it was his first time teaching 142, and all of the exam concepts can be found in his notes. But he looks for VERY specific answers on exams, so you might as well memorize his notes word for word because anything other than that is -0.5 -0.5 -0.5 -0.5. Lectures are useless because he goes over irrelevant concepts that aren't on exams.

Theres no textbook he just gives you a bunch of word files. he's pretty much an audiobook that you paid with your tuition. If you have no problem reading by yourself then I'd suggest you read them yourself cause he literally reads everything word for word.

He teaches everything pretty clearly. Lectures explain more than what you need to know for the tests. So, one could theoretically skip class and only read the PDFs and still attain an A+. I didn't need to pre-read or do any of the pre-lecture stuff, but mind you, I have already completed BISC 101+102 before hand, thus much of this course is review.

I didn't even attend a single lecture as everything was presented in the lecture notes. All you do is read the notes thoroughly and understand it. If you don't get it, go to office hours. Other than that, don't fall into what other people say about how much detail there is to remember for exams. Work hard, and it will pay off!

Took this class purely out of interest, and oof, it was a rocky one bois. Ryan is passionate, but there is an incredible amount of detail that he provides which leaves you wondering what to study/not study. 8:30-11:20 am lectures can get dry very quickly. Lab is great, though, and easy to get a good grade if you put in a moderate amount of effort

Exam keys are very rigid so for marking, if you don't have the near exact wording as him, you will do poorly. The class average for the lecture exam was about 50%.. That's saying something considering that previous class averages for this class was far higher. He teaches a lot of unnecessary info and you have no idea what he's saying in lecture

Keep in mind most of the reviews are for BPK105, and clearly he didn't have as much interest in the subject matter for that course because he was great for BPK142. Lab exam questions are given out in a question bank so you just need to do them before the exam and you've got some easy marks from that. The lab was interesting and tests were fair.

You really have to pay attention in class if you want a good mark in this class. The notes (not written by him) are really hard to understand, but he uses his own lecture ppts which really help. The grading is tough, really need to include a lot of details. Ryan tells a lot of related stories which really make things interesting. Very caring too.

Ryan was a great prof, very funny and knew a lot about his field. The material for this course was fairly difficult, but as long as you read the lab manual and study his lecture slides you should be fine! Only downfall is the two-hour lecture at 8am and the occasionally boring content.

Based off of the reviews, I expected this class to be really difficult. However, the exams are exactly based off of the review questions, objectives, and key terms, all on canvas, therefore they are really fair. There is a lot of reading though, as there are no slides and you have to teach yourself out of the textbook. Would recommend taking!

It was funny sitting back and watching students whine to the prof and TA endlessly about how tough the exams were (few even said they were harder than upper div classes) and that the grades should be scaled. The problem isn't the prof, it's YOU. The material isn't too bad, you just have to work hard and study smart. Make good notes.
