Comment:
Probably the worst class I've ever taken. you can understand 1 out of every 10 words the guy says, and his lectures are extremely unclear. You can tell he's an absolute genius but may be a little too smart for his own good. You won't pass if you don't keep up with the readings, he gives you sample questions for the essays on tests but that's it.

He doesn't speak clearly and often goes on tangents. I'm sure he's really smart and if he wrote a book about his thoughts it would be great and all, but he kind of stutters over what he's saying and never finishes it or gets it out clearly. Hard to follow. Scatterbrained. His class is easy enough but I don't recommend taking it. not worth it.......

Comment:
Retaking this class with Shapiro after failing it with Wheeler the first time, and the difference is astonishing. He clearly knows his stuff, but he went off on too many digressions to be of any help in class when discussing the nearly impenetrable Presocratic philosophers. He offers very few notes and sometimes just loses his train of thought.

Do the readings, trust me on this one. Do them. I took an Ancient Philosophy, the readings are often confusing and long. He does outlines which is good, but you should always attend class and do your readings.

Comment:
He need to prepare for his lectures. He often goes off on tangents, he gets lost, and confused. He'll start saying something that seems important and then he'll get side tracked! It is nice though that he gives out outlines to help you follow along. Also gave out practice quiz questions.

The more understandable of the two professors. Emails the outlines, but they're kind of a mess, so take notes. Keeping up with the readings is recommended.

Long lectures. Emailed powerpoints to student after, however notes were pretty hard to read. Very unclear. Tests were hard.

Lectures are pretty easy to understand, and all the notes are on his website. Exams are tough, with a handful of tricky multiple choice counting for a large portion of the grade. He gives a lot of power to TAs (50% of the grade) -- mine graded essays harshly and gave difficult quizzes, so it became pretty frustrating.

Lecture is bad. Cannot understand him or what he is talking about. Don't really have to go. He puts class notes online though. Read those, plus the books and go to discussion and you can do fine. Tests are pretty easy. Short answer and multiple choice. Asks easy questions.

Easy tests, but lecture does more harm than good. Read the books, the online notes, and go to discussion and you'll do fine.

I used to talk to him in his office and he gave me books by Donald Barthelme, Italo Calvino...a few others. He's into art as well. Maybe he's a better conversationalist than a professor, I'm not sure.
