It's not true that if you're not a good writer, you shouldn't be in media. There is plenty of room in this profession for: people who don't write well but are good editors, researchers, interviewers, and photographers, and for people who struggle with writing but will improve at school and on the job. The purpose of teaching is to develop talent.

If you can't write, you shouldn't be in media. Final. This course gave me many, many skills I have applied in media and business. At the time I didn't realize how useful it would be -- and what a great prof Shelley is. It ain't rocket science, so lose your ego, do the work, and learn from the best. You don't get these chances often.

Here's the thing with Shelley: Imagine going up on stage as a standup comic and just not being funny. Well, she does the same thing with budding journalists. If you're not good enough to make it, and yes, there's a way to know, she'll make it clear to you that you should find another path.

I had Shelley first year and I totally enjoyed her class. She has no patience for those who don't work hard and make an effort to be there, but if you just talk with her she's always around and willing to help you out.

Realistic as hell. Knows we're getting into a tough field so nice, but will not hesitate to tell you you've screwed up. Not good if you're looking for an easy ride but if you're in journalism you shouldn't be looking for an easy ride. Glad I had her.

This course (taught by any prof) destroyed many of my friends (who then left the program). My best friend cried, I cried... Shelley's tough. Some journalism profs only give you an A if you're good enough to be a professional -- that's just crazy.

A nightmare. She has no personal skills, refused to show marks, and was generally discouraging. Her lectures were repetitive and drawn out. She has no respect for her students and no right to decide who will and will not 'make it'.

Long boring lectures. Tough and stern. But she whips you into shape and you'll be ahead of other classes next year. If you're serious about journalism she's a tremendous help. The most helpful jour teacher I have ever come across.
