Comment:
Professor Opella is very good at what he does. His slides are well made and reflect the most important parts of ochem. I lose attention because he has a voice that is easily tuned out. However, he recaptures my attentions with his jokes. Unfortunately, because it's too early in the morning, the jokes are often lost on the class. He's very helpful

Professor Opella is straightforward when it comes to exams. He goes over only the most important concepts and right before the exams, tells us what questions to expect. Unfortunately we get pretty behind compared to other classes. It is quite possible to get an A in the class; but we warned: you won't be as adequately prepared for 140B.

Great Professor, great guy. He's the reason I pursued biochem as a major. Textbook heavy, but then again, most bio classes are.

his explanations are unclear - be ready to do a lot of reading on your own - i was disappointed with class because i thought it'll teach me basic NMR techniques and methods - instead it is only protein NMR - 1/2 the quarter is for students presenting - i'd rather learn something than listen to presentations of those who know as much as me about NMR

he reads off his powerpoints so there are only a few students attending lecture everytime. i needed extra help so i went to every lecture and was ready to die. at least he handed out the slides before class though...

He just reads off his power points and is very boring. The book and TA's pretty much got me through this course. He makes you memorize everything, which makes it hard to concentrate on the important concepts (no cheat sheets like the other Chem 6A professors)

Opella is the man! this guy has to be one of the easiest professor on campus. hated him the 1st week; gave crappy lectures on power point, but the ez midterms and helpful TA's made up for it. he looks like an old scrooge, but actually a really nice guy and has a good sense of humor.

His lectures are VERY boring and when I finished most of them, I asked myself why I even went. If you read the book and look at his powerpoint lectures online, there's really no point in going to class very often.

Prof Opella tries to teach, but never realizes he does a bad job. The class didn't go as deep into the book material as I expected. Read the book to do well on the weekly discussion quizzes. Opella has very easy multiple choice exams and finals because TAs review everything you need to know.

Professor Opella seems to be more interested in his research than actually being a good professor. Fortunatly his tests are M/C and are pretty easy, just try not to miss too many. You don't really need to attend lecture but discussions are mandatory because of the weekly quizzes.

Lecture was boring, but he shows powerpoints of everything you need to know. You basically don't need to read the book and you'll be fine. There are three multiple-choice midterms and you get to drop one, so just do well on the first two and you dont need to worry about the third.

I actually liked his class. The midterms were multiple choice and were fairly easy if you study. His ppts are taken from the book, so I hardy opened the book except to do hw. Quizzes in section aren't too bad. The TAs answer questions and go over things before. Overall, I would take his class again.

his lectures are useless and so are his slides. no need to take notes b/c it's all STRAIGHT from the book... just study the book and u'll do fine. his tests are fairly easy except he puts some useless conceptual questions in there sometimes
