Professor Martin has been such a great professor. Do the reading in the beginning of the semester and get ready to enjoy the rest of the class because you get to write two short stories and read other people's in the class. Pay attention and actually read the stories, they can be pretty great!

First time taking Professor Martin and wish I could take him again. He's very open to talk to and listen to other view points, but he will also give his opinion in a direct and encouraging manner. Class was fairly simple and the grading system seemed off, but overall it was great! Definitely would recommend.

I have taken Professor Martin for two semesters. He is a great professor! Basically, there are 6 quizzes, a booklet of short stories to read, and 2 short stories to write. I very much enjoyed writing the short stories, he marks them and for the final, you just revise it and turn it back in. That is pretty much it. good luck!

Comment:
Read various short stories from a reader and discuss them in class, learning technique, form, etc. Then, you write your own fiction, which the class will read and discuss. The class is immeasurably helpful for aspiring writers, 33 helpful editors. Warning: you will read A LOT of short stories at the end and they WILL wear on you. Be prepared.

Great man, Warm. Friendly. Will take your fiction to the moon and drop it back down into the depths of the deepest sea. A pleasure.

Super nice guy, nice workshop that's going to make you much of a better writer, but he's organized and helpful. Most of his classes seem to be over-full, which creates sterility. It's a standard workshop, 3 stories, trite replies from peers, good to get polite opinions on your work but *yawn* not a place to get honest rigorous opinions.

This class is inspiring and Martin is chill. I learned a lot and his structure keeps you wanting to come everyday. The class consists of 3 stories, 1 rewrite, and daily critiques of your peers. All the busy work is cut out, yet you're still occupied with useful assignments.

Good teacher. Some readings were interesting and all is mandatory. Papers must be turned in on time (creative insights=good grade). Takes attendance as soon as he walks in, so be on time! Raise your hand a lot and participate. Overall nice but somehow everything had the same themes (mostly communism) so it was a little repetitive at times.

I really enjoyed all of the readings for this class, and he always had something interesting to say about them. The class is really easy if you do the reading. Your grade is based on 10 quizzes and a 5 page essay. He encouraged discussions and comments and you can always talk to him.

He was super-duper good at looking into the readings and had cool interpretations. I loved the readings--all sorts of stories and most were amusing. Quizzes were easy if you actually read. A mellow class and not stressful at all. The reading assignments were never too much or boring. Seemed to have the respect & attention of the class always! :)
