Pretty simple class: read stories for homework and show up ready to discuss them. He does quiz you on the stories, so make sure you read them! Also, he is very lenient on topics for essays. He assigns reader responses and he tries to help you pick a developing topic for an essay from how you responding to a story. Very cool and insightful teacher.

Comment:
A lot of this class is about giving students freedom. However, when it comes to grading, his class kind of stinks. There really is no grading policy other than the story is "felt" which is so vague even the professor cant explain it to you, so when you get a bad grade, prepare to feel confused. Fun to take if it doesnt get in the way of a real clas

Professor Gutierrez is really enthusiastic about English and writing. He provides a lot of good life lessons. He'll give short quizzes that are easy as long as you read. This is a workshop class, so you'll be reading other students' work and vice versa. &You'll be critiquing each others' stuff. He does give you the option to be anonymous though.

This guy is great. My favorite professor on campus. Just work with him not against him, and trust his restrictions. In the end, he is fond of all kinds of work. The initial limitations he sets forth are more cautionary than universal. If you disagree with, say, his ban on genre fiction, prove him wrong with your work. He won't mind if it's good.

Very cool guy. Seems strict looking at first but is super easy going and, contrary to what people have said, likes a variety of stories. In my class, he seemed to enjoy even the less then stellar ones. Good class.

The best professor I've had at CSUEB. He's extremely helpful and eager to do so. I had a great experience in his class and I feel like I've improved a lot in my writing. A great guy who engages the class and has a lot of fun, helpful lectures.

Initially seems like a strict professor, slowly after is a very engaging professor who is clearly inspired by literary works. Do the reading and participate, if you are an adequate writer, you'll be fine.

Easily one of my best profs here. His class convinced me to switch to being an English major, if that's any indication. All this about sex drugs and rock n' roll is so not true, we read about everything from dead puppies to baseball mitts to murder to Disneyland. He gives great feedback(even though his handwriting is a bit hard to read)Take his class!

One of the best teachers I've had in my college career. He is genuinely interested in the subject and loves his students. Class is fun and never boring. The class was 3 hours long and I never got bored - I even looked forward to it. Would recommend him to anyone. He is wonderful and his class has changed my writing in amazing ways.

There's an untrue assumption floating around that you have to write about sex, drugs, and rock and roll in order for him to like your stories. I know from experience that as long as your characters are genuine and your story is well written, you're good.

He is wonderful, so warm and funny and at the same time he likes it off the wall. He is very real and you never have to feel like you can't write about anything you want. He is not easily offended and he appreciates a certain raw sensibility. He is fair and sensitive in grading. i would love to take more classes from him.

This teacher does NOT like "normal" fiction writing-He likes "sex, drugs & rock-n-roll." Not just edgy writing, but over-the-top erotica. Did not care for his style of "teaching" at all. He's very intolerant of those who don't fit his preferred style of writing.

This professor is very helpful for anyone wanting to seriously improve his/her writing. He is very approachable, and also very knowledgeable of his subject. There are often "pop" quizzes on readings, so just keep up on your reading, and you'll do fine in that area.

He's hard on mainstream, white popular males, his re-write grades aer ****, it's got to be a major overhaul for improved grade. Auhor's have to stuff crap into their stories to fit his re-write lengthing unspoken standards...
