Brilliant, kind, engaged... This man WANTS you to learn. Steve embodies the liberal arts experience in the best possible ways. Whenever he offers a class that fits my schedule I take it because it's always rewarding and full of joy.

Comment:

He's a great teacher, but I don't know if he's the deity everyone makes him out to be. If you get off on the wrong foot with him it's hard to turn it around, and it doesn't seem like he likes interpretations that don't build off his own. Also, the most terrifying experience of my adult life was seeing him get mad at a class for not participating.

Disappointing experience with Steve. After a couple weeks I got tired of doing the reading -- only to listen to him jam fiction through his "myth-making machine," in order to fit it to his course theme. His "over the hill" and "glue factory" jokes started making too much sense. Good, tough essays and grading, but really uninspiring lectures.

oh steve... one of the most brilliant professors I've come across. he's so passionate about literature, and he's made me passionate about it. his choices for course material is unparalleled--I eat up every book he's assigned. he definitely assigns a lot, and he expects participation, but it's so worth it.

wondered if he didn't like me at first, but he warms up to you if you participate and show an interest. with his enthusiasm and keen sense of which books to discuss, it's no surprise to me now how involved I became in his class. really an amazing guy.

Steve is amazing, he makes it easy enough that you could coast through if you really wanted to, but no one wants to because of how amazing and inspiring of a teacher he really is, I hate that he does not have tenure, compared to who does he really deserves it.

Great Professor. Simply great. He made class fun. He put so much energy into the class, that that was exactly what we gave back. His critisisms of papers are amazing. I have never seen another Prof put this much effort into evaluating his students work.

I never thought such dry, archaic literature could be so interesting. Steve is a brilliant teacher & an insightful literary critic. He's extremely thorough in his critique of student essays. He always picks up litter inside and outside buildings. Plus, he's absolutely adorable.
