Please note that almost everyone who says she is awful took her first year course, which is difficult, yes. But she is so incredibly smart and eloquent, she speaks like a book. Take her upper year classes, once you learn her vocabulary and better understand art history on the whole, you'll appreciate her. She is a wealth of relevant knowledge.

She does know what she's talking about; she just doesn't know how to convey it clearly to students. If you pay really close attention in lectures, you can grab the important bits, but since the course is one long, flowing discourse rather than chunked into individual topics, it's not very conducive to studying. The TAs help. Go to seminars.

This professor is really organic in her teaching style. You really have to do the required readings to understand what she's talking about. Extremely helpful when you ask her questions, though.

Very boring! She has her moments when she can be pretty funny. She is so all over the place in her lectures and barely uses the textbook and her exams are hard and useless. The class gave me no more knowledge then what I already knew. Find a diff prof if you wanna take this course

I wouldn't recommend her for first or second year courses as she is more of a one-on-one type of professor. Taking her seminar was very inspiration. You are required to read the articles and participate but it's well worth it. She may seem intimidating at first, but underneath that surface, she is a caring, extremely helpful professor.

This prof is atrocious, avoid at all costs. Her lectures are senseless ramblings and the textbook is no better. Her only saving point is that she realized we were all doing poorly and spoon-fed us the exams.

Ridiculous. Art History is my major and this prof completely ruined it for me. She is so hard to understand, and the midterms had no lecture content (it was completely from the textbook-which she didn't talk about in class), you have no idea of what's expected of you. Oh, and if I hear the word "arbitrary" again, i'll puke.

First years MUST avoid this professor.I recommend her classes for advanced students ONLY.Very difficult to take notes in her classes as she often describes things like this: "the flagness of the flag- we must suspend our disbelief," or "the objects objectivity is subjective to the viewer." Strange and very abstract lectures, a very difficult prof.

I absolutely LOVE her! I've taken about 4 courses with her throughout 2nd and 3rd year. I don't think she would be great for a first year class tho, very interested more in theory and the 'deeper issues'. You will learn SO much from her once you get used to her lecture style. Fair marker,easy to talk to, definitely attend lectures

Not once in my life have i ever done so poorly in a class, and in art history? my minor?Douglas is incomprehensible. Her exams are useless and so hard you go into them with no hope of passing. This is the most ridiculous course i've ever taken. I'm going into the exam with a hard-earned 61% and i can be guaranteed a fail.

Holy cow, what a class! For a first year class she expects a lot on the midterms. Uses the word arbitrary a lot! I feel like I never retain any information after her lectures. Not to mention the textbook for this class was crap as well so no help from it! Take the class with another prof!! Arbitrary.

she is a smart person, but doesnt know how to present the course information in even the slightest way. she focuses on small facts in continuous lectures without a grand theme or goal to be achieved. so when the final comes around (or any midterm) you have to try and memorize all of the million little things that could be on it AVOID AT ALL COSTS

An extremely intelligent professor who allows her students to think outside of the normal art historical dialogue. If you are at all interested in conceptual art, or art that 'tests the boundaries,' definitely take her courses. At first she appears to be quite difficult, but you will get used to her style and learn a great deal.

Although she's quirkily funny, approachable and witty, she isnt a good prof. Her lectures are difficult to follow, she says the same complicated but meaningless things over and over each lecture. I eventually had to stop going because I couldn't stand her dialectically superior yet hopeless rambling. Made the class a waste of time :(.

I can't believe people didn't like her, she was by far one of my fav profs! I loved her classes and you can tell she has a real passion for her work and is extremely knowledgable. If you love art history you will love her and learn alot from her!
