An example of how controlling this woman is: she instituted a semicolon fatwa. That's right, she would mark you down for using semicolons, even correctly. Surprise quizzes are inappropriate for third-year philosophy students, as is locking people out of the classroom for being late.

Far and away the worst professor in UVic's philosophy department.

She is an incredible Prof. So what if she runs a tight ship. Be on time and do the readings. If you work hard and understand the material you will do well. She goes the extra mile with help outside of class. Just don't get scared off in the first class. And turn your cell phone off!

If you don't have a strong backbone, don't take her. She is stuck in her ways and mean to students. But if you can get over that, it's pretty easy to get a good grade. I got an A.

Comment:
Overtly controlling in class, and far too rigid. I witnessed her be very demeaning towards students, including making a scene about them in class. Does not seem to understand Canadian law very well, making many mistakes in her lectures about the Charter. Very helpful outside of class, however. Overall, I would strongly recommend against taking her.

I have never had a bad professor at UVic; however, in my last semester I came across Turner. Horribly rigid, wastes class time, pointless conversation. She won't email, and won't give you readings ahead of time - so she's able to completely control the class. Likes to demean and put down; arrogant - I can see why she's lacking tenure...

She brings an incredible amount or ridgedness to her class. The correct sticker must be on every daily class quiz (mistakes on sticker = a zero), you cannot be 2 seconds late, etc) She does not understand how to think outside her box in anyway. I cannot stress enough the amount of crystalline knowledge she has,yet she lacks any fluidity of thought.

Great and funy professor! She is extremely knowledgeble but MAN, HER CLASS IS HARD! If you don't need it, don't take it since it will probably lower your GPA. She does agree with some students' perspectives but sometimes it seems like it's either her way or poor grade. She does teach you a lot about moral issues and make you think hard tho.

Don't bring an opinion with you to class. You are forced to be, or become her cookie cutter molds. she wants you to accept only her ideas. Be careful about the issue of liberalizing the sex trade, she is pro so don't dare argue against her or your mark will go down. Very biased marker. Dont take this class if you don't have to.

Don't take from this woman. She is a horrible teacher and needs to calm herself down: she goes crazy when phones go off, people come in late, people getting up for the washroom, etc. She is WAY to highschool for UVIC. Also, she is super rude to students and totally shuts down their perspectives.

Professor Turner is a very tough marker. However, it isn't too difficult if you do the readings. However, she is belittling and quite condescending. It's clear she is a very intelligent woman, but the student's appreciation for her teacher's intelligence is somewhat void when it is apparent the prof has no respect for the class.

Great Prof. Totally understands the readings, and will present them to you in a clear manner. Gets a good discussion going. You need to attend classes, though, as there is a mini quiz at the beginning of each one (though you have to do only 15 out of 20 of them).

She isnt THAT hard of a marker. You just have to write well, and understand the readings! Her office hours are also really helpful. She does a good intro to ethics, IMO.

very hard marker, but she does proofread essays, re-writes, and lets you drop your worst mark. Class was basically just a zoo with her allowing people to argue hypothetical once-in-a-lifetime arguments. material was dry, would not suggest if ethics isn't your cup of tea

Prof. Turner is a misserable educator. Her course was boring and oversimplistic. To compensate for the lack of real philisophical substance she grades ridiculously hard. I shouldn't have taken this course, and dropping out was a terrific decision. I would strongly suggest anyone who values rational discourse to avoid this course.

Hard, but fair marker. Encourages discussion and her lectures are easy to understand. If you do the readings and pay attention, there's a relatively easy A for you, as well interesting classes. Highly recommended, even if not a philosophy major/minor. Take any of her courses.

a heavy workload...that i can handle. hard marking...that i can handle. talking down to me when i go to her for help? no dice. I can appreciate that she's a tough woman but certain amounts of respect need to be earned and making me feel like an idiot for asking a question about my mark is not helpful, constructive or fair. Turner belittles

Honestly, she's a tough woman, but is highly organized and knows what she wants. If you get a poor mark on an essay, she's approachable and will tell you how to improve it for next time. She really does want her students to succeed, and once you get to know her, she's a sweetheart. Makes an effort to actually KNOW her students.

She is a tough but fair marker who's strict in regards to her essay format. She makes sure that readings are done via daily quizzes. She seems intimidating at first but it's to phase the not-so-serious students! I would recommend her Phil classes because she is an excellent prof that inspires students to listen and participate in her lectures.
