The worst university experience I have ever had. Went into my exam this morning not knowing my grade, even though she promised she would post them. She rarely ever got through lecture material and was in my opinion was way too hard a marker for not giving proper instruction most of the time. Be prepared to teach yourself the class or better AVOID

This professor is one of the worst I have had at university so far. She rarely ever finishes lectures and she gets off topic A LOT. I found her exams also very difficult and asked very little things from the textbook. She is a very slow marker and overall a terrible prof. Do not take a class with her!

She's a nice woman, however her tests (at least I found) were unfair. She takes 90% of the questions from the textbook and they are small insignificant facts. i.e: "finish this quote". Takes a LONG time to get marks back. I went into the final exam not knowing my grade in the class but you get participation marks just for showing up so thats good!!

This prof isn't great, she is rude and gives awful feedback. Her classes are lengthy and she tries to cram way too much detail into the lecture slides. She also doesn't want to hear your feedback about marks. Furthermore, her tests are difficult they are very specific about minuscule parts of the readings that anyone could have easily missed.

A just over a week before students need to start getting ready for second semester and not only does she not have any exam grades marked she also has not updated marks for presentations done months before the end of the semester. This class was super disorganized, she never made time for her students, even cancelled office hours before the exam!

I am surprised by some of the negative comments about Hooks on here. I found her course to be fairly easy in comparison to other sociology courses on main campus. I found the midterm and final exam to be fair and decently easy. The assigned readings were interesting and you only need to know the main points of it which she discusses in class too.

Get ready to teach yourself this course. Her lectures slides and taken word for word from textbook. What am I paying this university to do? Doesn't reply to emails, gets super off topic. Only covers about 1/4 of required content in class, teach yourself the rest. Super long to get grades back. Just overall one of the worst classes I have ever taken

The most unorganized prof I have ever had, rarely finish lectures and yet are still expected to know all the information. You will get no information about the exam and she easily gets off topic with tangents that aren't important to the class. She is also impossible to get a hold of with questions or meetings, she only answers emails a week late.

If you enjoy little organization, never finishing lecture slides, getting behind on lessons and getting little to no information on the exam, then this is the class for you! Must be present for every class because participation matters but there is a very high chance she will not remember your name regardless if you speak everyday, so good luck!

One of the toughest professors I've had at university this far. Initially I was excited to take this course, and although her lectures are alright, she rambles and doesn't seem enthusiastic about teaching. She assigns the most amount of readings I've ever had at a university... one week had 7 chapters. Participation is based on if she likes you.

Dr. Hooks lectures are sleep inducing because she talks so slow and quiet. She appears to have very little knowledge of the subject matter other than what's posted on her slides. If you question your mark or teaching style, she will just get offended and hold it against you. Great first term text; you will despise the 2nd term text though.

This course is not a bird course, one really needs to put the effort into studying. If one puts the effort into the readings, lessons, and participation, they can do well. Her questions maybe confusing, but she gives you quiz samples for you to do before the exam, so you can understand how her questions will be like.

Most of this class is based off participation, in class and online. Tests were very difficult as it was unclear what to study. Hooks is a tough marker and concepts are quite broad which makes it even more difficult. A lot of this class was based of her opinion. If she didnt like what you had to say, she seemed to get offended

Material was easy to grasp but the extra book was quite unnecessary(redundant info). She takes pleasure in asking specific questions which most people would overlook. This isn't an essay course but get ready to write a novel to get full participation marks. Whatever happened to conveying your thoughts in a concise manner? Decent prof/ course.

I've taken a few classes with Tess Hooks from 2003-2007. I'm now in graduate school but have been wanting to spread the word re: what an inspiring lecturer prof Hooks was. I would recommend taking a lecture with her, specifically women in third world development. Tess Hooks is a fabulous teacher and role model.

WAY to many readings to complete each week (50-100pgs). Her lectures focus on the important points of the readings, however she does not include these "important" points in her exams. Exams are decent but they do not test your knowledge. She definitely tries to "trick" you with irrelevant material.

Ugh. That basically sums this course up. Really boaring and all over the place. I just stopped going to the lectures, as I found they did nothing to improve my understanding. The only thing I like about this course was the novel "stuffed n starved" that we read and that it was used in the essay exam (much easy to answer than the rest of the questio

Just did sociology course, every week the readings on-line were screwed up, did not open. 3-4 long boring readings every week, one week 6 readings which she later said not to bother with. Said exam was cumulative, but wasn't wasted lots of time. course kinda sucked
