Comment:

Professor Loebel is extremely knowledgeable in his field, and very approachable (even if he might seem intimidating at first)! Explains complicated material in depth which helps to clarify readings. A natural lecturer who facilitates discussion well. Aside from that, he is also such a genuine, charismatic, helpful, and kind person! Great class!

He will work with you tirelessly to make you a better writerif you want to be. He has high expectations: the smarter you are, the more he'll push you. He's got a great sense of humour and always has something funny, witty, and kind to say. He's very accessible in office hours or over e-mail. He will change how you think. He is a truly great prof!

Let me begin with: I effing love this man. It has been a few years but if he is even a fraction as inspirational as he was when I was taking his class then professors like him are quite frankly a godsend. I wish I was still at York to hear him talk, and may visit again one day. If you are taking his class, I STRONGLY SUGGEST you talk to him.

Tom is very responsive to the creative confusion felt about the course. He's a great motivator and inspiring teacher by nature whose language gets relevantly metaphorical. I do enjoy every moment of this class.

Prof Loebel made this class very easy. He is an excellent professor with great teaching skills. Prof Loebel was very helpful and made sure each and every student in the class was doing great! I would definitely recommend to take his class. He is the best!

His essays are hard and his expectations are high; If you are looking for an easy way to get your way through Derrida and Lacan and other big names, this is not where you want to be; BUT IF YOU ARE WILLING TO LEARN, don't hesitate and follow this guy around wherever he goes. He is more than brilliant, and grade-wise? just submit drafts before due.

He is not an easy professor but I believe he deserves a perfect score. You probably won't understand him many times during the year because he speaks very intelligently. But he genuinely cares (A LOT) and I respect him for that. You might not walk out with an A, but he will change you as a student and as a person if you're willing to put in work.

One of the very best professors I have ever had. Dr. Loebel is brilliant, an amazing lecturer, wickedly funny, and a generally exceptional human being. He is always more than willing to help students by giving extensive feedback for essay drafts and ideas. Part stand-up comic, part visionary genius, Dr. Loebel is a paragon of phenomenal pedagogy.

Amazing professor! The class was difficult at first but I pushed through, ended with a great mark. He got me interested in psychoanalytic literature which was not really of interest to me at all prior to this course. Overall great guy, somewhat intimidating to approach (he wasn't my TA) but fantastic lecturer. A+ course!

Fantastic professor! Hilarious, witty and surprising. Provides an interesting few on classic texts, and extremely willing to help students outside of class. As a science major he really helped me develop my english writing skills, while taking my academic background into account. Class is hard work, but it will pay off.

Very Confusing. No one, not even the tutorial leaders, understood what the assignments were so we all had to wing it. He is funny though and sometimes makes jokes. Very interactive, but he laughs at himself a lot because we have no idea what the jokes meant. Very well informed though.. surprised i did well. Very unnecessary lecture.

Very funny. Really helpful but his tests/essays are still difficult. Uses interesting material. A little too hot. Hopefully not gay. 1300 was a real challenge. Overall a great prof. I don't think I'll ever forget him.

I had prof. Loebel a number of years ago, during my undergrad. I'm doing my PhD now, and he still remains my absolute favourite. He's incredible. His classes totally shaped me in so many fundamental ways. Take his class: he'll make you sweat, but it's worth it.

Absolutely wonderful! He's funny, smart, and quite a challenge. He makes you want to succeed in his class, and he's just as encouraging. Great sense of humour, snarky, sarcastic - most would find it intimidating but he's fabulous! Definitely take this class if you want to be a better writter - and you MUST read his grammar guide!
