Comment:
CMIT 391 was a good hands-on class with real-world application. The book had excellent examples. Holt did a good job of teaching the course, was very clear on what was expected, and encouraged questions. Completing all homeworks and labs gets you a C. The final was hard but reflects real-world Linux SysAdmin work. Grading was fair.

Comment:
I took this class right after CMIT 391 and the overall class experience was similar to CMIT 391. The topics were noticeably more advanced than 391 but Mr. Holt spent adequate time in class to make sure each student got out of it what they put into it.

Excellent class! Although he didn't spend any time covering prequisite topics he did spend time assiting novices with some of the more intermediate topics to make sure everybody had an oppurtunity to succeed. The pace of the class was geared toward the high end of intermediate to advanced skills.

I took PERL with Tim Holt a while ago, I'm doing this from old memories. I remember the class as being a little tough, and also remember feeling sorry for people without much programming experience because he didn't seem like he was very good at connecting with the newbies. It was an upper-level class though, I guess he approached it like one.

His homework and quizzes contain questions about material not covered in the notes or the textbook. He assumes that we have expertise when we don't. That's a sign of a poor teacher.

I found this instructor to be very arrogant; he forgot why adults take evening classes. You get more from reading the text book than attending his lectures.
