Final exam worth 70% and an added penalty for wrong answers had 10% of questions that were specifically omitted from the reading. It's like he designed the course for students to fail.

If you want to take a class where you have no communication with the prof who does not want to be contacted in anyway or care about your success; this is the class for you. Assignments were a breeze and midterm fairly easy. The 70% final is extremely difficult every third answer wrong he takes an additional mark off. Run from him and take in person

I have Stat 101 online but this course was easy and he provided us with the key point via Canvas, so you should just read books and his lectures. Recommend to have this course online with this prof to get basic knowledge about statistics and statistical procedures. By the way our TA was really great!

Comment:
The midterm is pretty easy if you do all the questions from the assignments. For the final, more than 90% questions are conceptual questions, and the wording can be a bit confusing. But there are fair anyways. Make sure read the textbook thoroughly before you go to the final.

Mr. Swartz is one of the most amazing profs at SFU. Very considerate to students, only a few assignments and all of the reading is done in the textbook which is only 700 pages. He wants students to learn the material well as he makes every chapter fair game for exams. Final is worth 70% and you get penalized for wrong answers so study up! :)

Guys never take STAT270 online from this prof. I took this course online. On campus there is a 3 hour class every week but he will just give you 20 min. online videos a week. You have to do everything on your own. You also have to buy a textbook which is written by the same prof. but I will say don't buy that. Go for other books.

Wow this course is hard, no super hard should I say. I took online course, and material especially book and his video helped me a lot. Final is super hard, do not even think you can just pass the final then pass the course. Like he said, keep practising the questions from the book. You will be fine.

Final exam is worth 70% of the total grade and is completely multiple choice. Wrong answers are penalized. I wouldn't take his class again even though I did fairly well. Avoid if you can

Not a very good professor. What are you doing teaching if you refuse to answer emails about what it's like to be a Statistics major?

Great professor. He covers material very in-depth for the introductory course. He wrote his own textbook (which saves you a lot of money), and you can always ask him for advice. Highly recommend doing the questions that he has in his textbook.

Tim is a very inspirational and helpful prof! He has great enthusiasm for stats especially in sports. I always enjoyed discussing stats with him, and learned a lot. If you love sports, take courses with him! (but his students, as the TAs, may be harsh on marking the midterm)

I enjoyed class and thought he explained things well. However, I would have liked more examples in the lectures because sometimes there were types of questions on the assignmentsexams that we had never seen before. If you drop by his office he is almost always willing to help if you have questions. Exams are really tough, but grades are curved.

It's an online class so you never see or talk to the prof, theres a TM that manages everything. Theres one midterm - super easy if you do the textbook questions - and one 70% final that was way harder than the midterm. Really took everyone by surprise. Heavy on the last 3 chapters covered.

Took this via distance ed. Everything was through the TA, didn't meet him at all. But like any mathstats class if you read the textbook and do practice questions, you will do well. I thought the exams were fair.

Super super hard final exam like you had learned nothing in the previous 3 months when you see the questions with a super super useless textbook so, avoid him as possible as you could.

This professor is so mean, if you have to talk to him. Normally you wouldn't in a distance ed class, but I had to write to him for an extension due to a specific situation. I provided the note too, and he did not care. I got an "extension" of a couple of hours and he said something really mean in his e-mail back. Avoid if possible!

He is a nice guy, however sometime you will be confused by his questions if you are not a native English speaker. e.g obtain the prob that 2X exceeds Y by more than 4, you want P(2X-Y>4). Exam is super hard but you learn stuff through the process. Have an extra textbook ready and the first thing you want to do is correct the typos in his textbook

While taking this course I did not realize, but this course is really helpful, especially for Macm 201. I pretty much went through the notes, studied the textbook and like the prof said, I did a lot of questions from the back of the chapters. The TA was super helpful as well. I thought this was going to be a hard course but it wasn't as bad.
