I took the SOCI254 course as a first year student and I really enjoyed it. I had no previous knowledge of IDS or sociology so I had to work a little extra to understand the concepts, but it was worth it. Made me want to go into IDS! He's such a cute little old man.

Do not take this class unless you have a considerable background in sociology and social sciences. There is a crazy amount of reading, he talks a lot (in a boring way) in class and therefore it is hard to take notes and to stay focused. Only take this class if you are very interested in the field. The tests are difficult and the grading is unfair.

He is a nice teacher but lecture are long and boring it is hard to take notes as he talks. Mostly recommend for people who are really interested in the subject and who have a background otherwise avoid

Probably a hard class if you are in first year, but a relatively easy class if you are familiar with the material from IDS or developing world Poli majors. Lectures are interesting. Multiple choice questions were a bit ridiculous on the midterm/final. I felt like the short answers were graded fairly.

Super knowledgeable and helpful Professor. He's worth getting to know, and going to his office hours is super helpful. Very fairly graded and interesting course, TAKE IT!

I took this class as an elective and it was way too difficult! It might be a better choice for someone who is already studying sociology and has a good knowledge in the field, but it could be too demanding for someone how has no prior knowledge. There is A LOT of material: 2 textbooks and the lectures are long and monotone

Absolutely loved this class. It's a lot of material, but it is well worth it. Do not expect an easy A, you definitely need to attend lectures and do the readings. That said, if you go to class and do the readings you should have no problem at all. Exams are fair. Took with intd 200 and did not see much overlap (this class was much more interesting)

This class was ridiculously hard for a soci class. I took it along with INTD 200 and while some of the material overlaps, a lot of it is different. The midterm was decently hard, you have to memorize tons of useless information. The final covers the whole year which is A LOT of information. Overall I wouldn't take the class again, but I love Locher

Great professor, material is very interesting and lectures clear. You have to attend all of them as they are very dense. Does not whisper, has a slight accent which is rather funny. Altogether a awesome an funny guy with a lot of useful knowledge to share. Even though he doesn't recommend taking this with INTD200 take it you won't regret it.

You must sit in front of the classroom to hear what he is saying. Though he is not the best lecturer, it is really worth listening to what he say. The midterm and final are straight forward and if you did your lecture and came to class, you easily can have a good grade. Recommended as an elective.

Though the content of this course is quite interesting to me, the lectures were extremely dull, full of Locher's "stats" and "graphs". It seemed to distance us from the actual development issues by going through slides and slides of stats. Could have been such an intriguing course but it did not spark my interest whatsoever.

Good class, but assessments were a little bit ridiculous. Midterm, had so much to do in less than an hour, almost impossible. Final- had a page limit. So couldn't really show what I knew. However, the class if fascinating and he's a great lecturer, main problem is just his assessments.

Many readings, must attend lectures. Has slight accent. Does not provide any reviews before midterms/exams, unlike in past years. If you work hard you can get an A. Material is interesting but when it comes to studying, there is soo many details and notes; do not cram! Exams are half M/C, half your choice of short answer and very fair. Helpful TAs!

Loved this class and loved him. He pretty much tells you what's going to be on the exam, and if you go to class you don't really need to do the readings as he does a great job at explaining everything clearly. Uses good personal stories as examples. Mostly common sense. I would definitely take another class with him.

Fantastic guy. Sentences sometimes a little difficult to understand as he likes to go on tangents about his work in Latin America, but great for examples you'll need. Class is easy to ace if you just attend class, listen, and do the readings. Overall, very enjoyable, and material is a lot of common sense, which he takes into account.
