Campbell is nice and clear as to what he expects from the class. You need to go to class if you want to do well,but it is fun! He gives out homework every class but it is doable. He also has take home tests with an honor code. He really cares about his students. I enjoyed this class so much i signed up for summer study abroad program in Germany.

I took this class to learn the language, and I did. Campbell is an excellent professor that has a unique lecture style. He is a little intimidating, but if you really put in the work you will do well. I had 2 chapter tests, each 10%, a midterm, 15%, and a final, 15%. The tests are comprehensive. Be aware of an oral exam at the end of the quarter!

Ausgezeichnet. Campell is a kind yet challenging instructor who really succeeds at immersing his students thousands of miles away from Deutschland. He really cares about his students' progress, and the daily work done in and out of class isn't typical language class busy work. Danke sehr!

Walter Campbell is by far one of my favorite professors at UCSC. If you want to learn German, he's the man who will get you there. You have to put in the effort, but if you show up to class, do the homework, and ask questions, you'll be well on your way to conversing in german. PS, tests are take home!

Herr Campbell is a very good teacher. He is clear and is good at immersing you in German. My biggest critique is that he is intimidating, I struggle with being comfortable enough to approach him. He lecture style is nearly militant. His grading is fair, but tough. There is a LOT of work to do to be caught up in this class.

Professor Campbell is awesome! The only part that sucked about the class was that it was at 8AM, but other than that i really enjoyed it. He is really helpful, organized, and doesn't make you feel bad if you don't know an answer. I've had him for two quarters and am taking another one of his classes next quarter. Can't wait :)

Walter is a very efficient, kindly professor - even though it was an 8AM class, I didn't really mind that too much and I'd take it again, even if there had been a later option with a different professor. He's not exactly an easy grader, as many other language teachers are - he'll knock off your points if you misspell or screw up your word order. That said, the course material isn't particularly challenging or fast paced, even in this supposedly intensive-speed class.

One of my favorite professors here! It was an 8am class, but I was still excited to go every time. Make sure to do the homework and pay attention in class, since he calls on everyone. (And even if you messed up, he didn't make you feel like an idiot, which is great in a language class.)

I adore him. Given the option of the later German class (8am language class can be really unappealing), I choose Herr Campbell's class hands down. He commands your attention and he's helpful! Not a class for people not willing to put in the effort, there's homework every night and everyone is called on every class, but it's a fantastic class!

Amazing professor! He definitely made this 8am class worth it. Very clear, used repetition a lot which is good in a language class. Make sure not to miss any classes because it is hard to catch up! There is homework everyday & he collects and grades all of it. He is one stellar dude!

He is amazing. Definately a cool guy, and a very very organized professor. He comes in knowing exactly what's going on, and we never got off topic. Some take home tests, but you really have to go to class, because if you get behind even once, it's hard to get back on track. Plus he counts attendance like no other!!

Prof. Campbell is easily the best teacher I've had. Even if you come to class unprepared and half asleep, you'll leave having learned anyways. He makes learning German really enjoyable and I would definitely recommend him. Avoid taking German from anyone else!

He really knows his German for being an American. Very helpful. (Ask him for stories from his trips to Germany.) You have to put in a lot of effort outside of the classroom. Review, read, do homework. The class involves a lot of hands on practice. So make sure to find a study group or some german speakers to talk with regularly.

Herr Campbell is the best professor I've had at Santa Cruz. I've learned an insane amount of German in a short amount of time. The class is pretty fast paced but Walter makes it seem easy.

Herr Campbell is a wonderful professor. He begins to immerse you in the language from the first day of teaching using his body language to assist ones comprehension. I have never had a more competent professor and recommend him highly to anyone with an interest in the language. The class moves fast and has a lot of HW but worth every minute!
