Took him for 452 and 465 and dreaded going to both classes. Both he gives such conspicuous directions for awful group papers. No guidance. Literally tells you he doesn't give guidance so you can learn yourself. Analyzing transcripts word by word. Boring class. Hard grader. Makes you buy his book and only teaches his own ideas. Dont take

I learned very little about conversation analysis, which I was interested in. The bulk of the class involves discussing the book within small groups. There were maybe 3 lectures at most. The grading criteria is not clear either, there's not even a course calendar, so if you want a good grade you must see him during office hours. Hardly organized.

Dr. Beach is an awesome professor, this class was the least class I stressed in all semester!! Dr. Beach is very personable and helpful. 2 group projects and two exams which are curved! I enjoyed his class very much.

Comm 423 (Patient- Provider interactions) is very difficult, he makes you buy his $150 textbook which is heavily used throughout the class. 3 papers, one individual and two group papers. He also loves to ramble and never answers questions well. Would avoid taking Beach if possible!

I am not sure why everyone finds this class so difficult or has a problem with Beach. He is a really nice guy and I thought this class was EASY! Two group papers and Two test. It's a 15 page paper that you write in a group of 5-7... so you end up writing around 2 pages. Not difficult at all. If you study for the test, you will do well. Easy class

Dr. Beach is going to be hit or miss. You'll either really enjoy his classes or you'll resent them. I took him for both Comm 465 and 452. Group projects galore but I really enjoyed both classes. Very interesting subject matter in both. My classes were always engaged in in-depth conversations where most people contributed. I would take him again!!!

WORST teacher at State by far. Talked more about himself and the research he has done rather than the class himself. Definitely avoid this class if you are fulfilling one of your COMM Requirements for grad. Extremely rude to students, had the flu and didn't excuse me from my attendance points. Tests are very difficult. Don't take this Professor..

DON'T TAKE. First time I ever felt the need to warn people. Hardly lectures about the material, I went to pretty much every class and all he does is talkbrag about himself. I'm an A student, and I learned NOTHING. He's also very rude to students. Its CA class & he makes you write a marketing paper to promote HIS book as the final project!!!?

If you can avoid conversation analysis aka conversational interaction, do so. Or, if you are interested in learning about Beach himself then take this course because that's basically whats going to happen. Can be very rude and I can honestly say I still have no idea how to analyze a conversation, and I got an A.

Conversation Analysis with Dr. Beach is a methods class, not as tough as Patient-Provider Comm but still a difficult course. Reading is essential, attendance is 20% of your grade. 2 big group papers, 1 midterm, 1 final, 2 group presentation that technically don't count for credit but influence how he grades your papers. All in all- useful class

Patient-Provider Comm w Dr. Beach is a very difficult course for health comm students serious about research in the future. If you want to go to graduate school or pursue research, Dr. Beach will be incredibly helpful. Papers are long and serious. Conversational analysis is taught in a "learn by doing" style. Tons of group work. Hard, but worth it

Overall easy, Group projects will kill you! Tests easy if you attend class, listen. Makes buy his book and final GP was about finding him ideas to further his career and he doesn't deny it. So beach might be one of the most self absorbed people i've ever met. The whole class is about his book he wrote which you can't sell back because he wants to make more money off it. Your last paper is a paper marketing his play he made about the findings he found about cancer that he thinks will change the world. Didn't learn anything.

I was nervous about this class before taking, but it turned out to be easy. ATTEND class and you will do great. I didn't read the book for the midterm and got a B(and I do TERRIBLE on tests) Just listen in class and understand. Group projects are easy, as long as everyone works on it. Good professor, understands, respectful, fun and nice. Take it!

Professor Beach is an awesome professor who teaches very applicable information, for both careers and life. There is a lot of group essays though, and if you're in a mismatched group it can be frustrating. That being said, he's a great professor and I learned a lot. Both his classes were really inspirational and I definitely like CA

This class teaches important life-lessons about gender in society. Beach wants his students to learn and understand the course material that will help improve our society. Beach is really helpful and approachable. 3 group papers and a midterm exam; no final exam. No textbook required. Take this class!

Great class! Beach is a nice person and so helpful. He is very knowledgeable about CA. 3 group papers and a midterm. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who has ties to hope and cancer. Very touching class!

My favorite teacher at San Diego State. He is by no means an easy A and his classes take considerable work. He is passionate about CA and I learned so much more than most other classes. He is one of the select few professors that have inspired me. If you want to learn material that you can use in everyday life take this class but be ready to work.
