Very passionate about his subject. Be prepared to write a lot on tests. It seems he grades: less on what you write and more on what you dont write. One of his actual notes on my essay was "this section alone should take up 2 pages of information front to back" I lost points because I didnt write a 3-4 page essay in an hour.

Dr. Van Lear has superior knowledge in the field of economics. He has a book about economics published. Many students find his teaching style difficult, but to me, that is likely because he challenges students in ways most professors do not. He has a clear standard that requires attention and focus from students. I took Dr. Van Lear's class twice.

Van Lear is the sweetest teacher I have had. I took his class my first semester of freshman year and didn't prepare myself well for tests so my advice is to STUDY. He gives you all the notes you need in class; organize them well and don't assume you know the material. He is always willing to help and will repeat anything you miss during lectures!

He does not teach/explain anything. He just reads the textbook and expects you to understand it. He does not adapt to different learning styles, is vague, and it is difficult to get him to answer specific questions clearly. Expects you to read ENTIRE textbook even if you dont learn that way. Not recommended.

Dr. Van Lear is super knowledgeable. He is friendly and clear cut. However, his tests are the hardest I've taken.

I probably came in his class more libertarian than I thought. He did challenge my views and instill in me a tendency to read more and second-guess my dogmatic assertions. One slight criticism is that he can be a little too abstract. Generous with his office hours; I advise students to use them and not just rely on the readings and written notes.

The class was good, and the professor knows the information. He is a real good professor that goes straight forward with the information. The only reason most of us dropped his class was that the test was the only to see if we passed. Test are usually like writing an essay about what one study's and what he talked about in class.

Beware of Van Lear! So hard. Got a C on my test because he thought I didn't provide enough details. All tests are essay and he expects you to reiterate everything he lectures to get an A in his class. I dropped because I couldn't afford a bad GPA.

Very informative and knows his subject well. Easy class, all you do is listen and he gives you all the information that will be on the test. Tests are easy and short but you must study all of the info because you don't know what sections he's going to select. All in all a great professor and relatively easy A.

Dr Van Lear did not seem as though he was interested the the success of his students only if they could mimick his understanding and almost word for word verbage. The only way I passed was a previously student advised me to write down everything he said and memorize it. B- result what a sad result - his way or no way

OMG!!!! This was the most difficult class that I've had to date, and this was the INTRO CLASS!!! You almost need a prerequisite class prior to taking this intro class. Dr. Van Lear is very enthusiastic about the subject and is very well versed in it. However, he teaches well above most of the student's heads.

He is a really amazing teacher... Yeah, lots of work... I have had more work in his classes than in any other (ever)... but I learned more in his classes than any other. He is still super nice and will explain anything as long as you are willing to ask - just be ready to read and take lots of notes.

Horrible, need some direction. Does not know how to teach to individuals that having different learning styles and is always looking for flaws and are very intimidating and not helpful. Is useless and has a lot of people talking negative. Does not seem to want people to master the class and offers not resolution. Will deter others from taking class

Comment:
Van Lear's class is RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT there is non-stop readings and the tests (5) are all ESSAY + nothing else. This class could easily be a level 4000000 class not an intro class. I suggest unless you really enjoy economics to avoid him at all costs. I am not exagerating im an As-Bs student and I STUDY WAY TOO MUCH for this class earned a B.
