He can be funny when he wants to be, but he's also very short-tempered when students show up late, use cell phones, or don't take notes while he's lecturing. His expectations are super high and he requires that students go beyond what they learn in his class. There's a lot of reading and this class definitely isn't an easy A.

He's honestly the greatest and you can tell that he's passionate about the subject. I was expecting a history heavy class, but it was more about how African history is portrayed and different biases. However I feel that what I ended up learning will be more useful in the long run as opposed to itty bitty details. Would definitely recommend!!!

Dr. Maloba is the best professor I've had so far at UD. His lectures are so engaging and he loves to open up the floor for discussion. He really makes you think and expects a lot of his students- but you come out of his class with such a passion for the topics/issues he's brought up and is a professor you'll want to take future classes with.

He makes you work - lots of readings and two 15-page research papers. But he's the most inspirational professor I've ever had. Seriously take this class - it'll change your life.

He is more than just a great professor. I cherished the wisdom he gave in his office hours and our talks after class. His class really helped shaped my identity even though I was already aware and confident in myself. The class demands work but when I say it was all worth it, believe me. I would take it again if I could, simply amazing.

Dr. Maloba was by far the highlight of my semester. I have never taken his courses before this but it is clear he knows how to do his job. There's a good amount of reading, you can get away with skimming if you attend class and take notes. Extremely clear during lectures, will repeat key points 2-4 times in one class. Provokes intellectual thought.

I had Maloba for HIST397 prior to taking this class. I still hold him in very high regard. He is a great professor. Class feels somewhat like a BAMS course and I found myself thinking about race more in this than in 397. I also feel a greater appreciation for African culture, so he's doing something right. -- Do NOT underestimate the map test.

I think Dr. Maloba is a great professor. The lectures are information rich and he encourages the students to think by asking questions. He is a fair grader. He's clear enough that you can get good grades on the tests by just paying attention to the lectures. Can get angry if he thinks you're not paying attention. A+ Professor

Maloba is passionate about what he teaches but is disrespectful to students. He told a kid "I dont think you are bright." Difficult to understand, and you better always agree with him or your grade will go down. Attendance is mandatory and you cant leave or talk during class. DO NOT take this class if you're white. Other than that, funny laugh

This class is extremely difficult. His tests are in-class essays where he expects you to remember very specific details from the many readings he assigns, and he is a very harsh grader. His lectures are unorganized and unclear, mostly random discussions without solid direction. But yes, he jokes and has a funny laugh.

Definitely not the easiest 100 level class but probably the most rewarding. Maloba really makes sure to teach you things that are important and relevant to you. Exams are hard and require info from outside of lectures. Fair grader when it comes to them though.

Rigid, but when it comes to exams, he gives you the grade you deserve. I would advise anyone taking the class to be able to remember many many details from the reading and use them in the essay exams.

For a 100 level course, this class was very hard. First test we were required to memorize all 54 countries and capitals in Africa, spelling counted, and this was the easiest test by far. To get a good grade on the essay tests, reiterate his biased opinion, he will take many points off if you disagree with him
