Loved her class. I tried taking linguistics with a different professor previously and understood nothing. Switched to Shi and everything is great. Show up to class and take notes and you'll get an easy A while still learning what you need.

Dr. Shi is so sweet. She really knows her stuff about English linguistics. It is important to read the book so you're not lost during her lectures, but she prepares you well for the tests with her worksheets and short homework assignments. I really enjoy this class!

Dr. Shi is very willing to help and answer your questions. Her lectures are very scattered at times and also very dry. I found that following along in the book during lecture was helpful and also reviewing/reading the book helped with my understanding as well. She does have an accent but I did not find that it made keeping up in class difficult.

Best advice is to follow along in the book when she gives her lectures and to ask questions. She is seriously so sweet and nice and will help you out! A little bit of a language barrier, but still a great teacher!

Comment:
Dr. Shi is Chinese so there is somewhat of a language barrier, although she is remarkably good at English linguistics for it to be her second language. Most of the time her lectures were enough for me, but when I had any questions I was able to find answers in the textbook. She is very sweet and a lenient grader, even though material can be tough

Sweet, nice, caring, intelligent professor, but her class was difficult. I think if she presented material in a more organized and simplified manner the course would be much easier, she doesn't seem to purposely make it difficult. Sometimes she has a hard time understanding student questions or doesn't know how to answer questions.

She is a very sweet lady, but she there are somethings that she tells you and she does not clarify what it means till later. This class is very hard for me! I studied three days and got a C on my test.

Dr. Shi is a super sweet lady. She is from China but she is pretty easy to understand. This was a really tough class for me though. The concepts are difficult for me I think because it is a very different subject. Sometimes random languages pop up during lecture or homework and it throws me off. I respect Dr. Shi very much. The class was just hard

This was one of my favorite classes last semester. This professor is very knowledgeable and helpful! The only complaint is her grading system is a little different. If you pay attention and do the assignments you should pass this class no problem!

Kind, effective, and easy, Yili Shi is easy to understand and explains the material thoroughly and has the class do in-class activities to help them understand the information. Best professor I had all semester.

The best professor I have taken yet. She is clear, and has the students rigorously practice the material in-class. I have nothing bad to say about her teaching.

Took as an elective. She's knowledgeable. Explains topics clearly and gives lots of examples, but you might have trouble if you're REALLY bad with foreign accents. Three tests, non-cumulative final (it's the 3rd test). 10 assignments: 3 are short papers and the others are worksheets. Interestingeasy class.

Overall, it is an easy class. Some of the linguistics concepts are a little difficult to understand through her explanations (not b/c of her, but of the complexity of the topic), but the book clears them up well. I received a high A. Class can be boring at times, but she is so sweet.

Class is super easy. The final is NOT comprehensive. Tests are exactly like the homework. Dr Shi is very friendly. Her English is excellent, very clear. She spends a lot of time reviewing material covered in the last class period, so class can get a bit boring. However, you will know the material backwards and forwards without hardly any studying.

Dr. Shi is pretty enthusiastic about her work. She especially seems to like pragmatics. If you have a tough time with accents, you should probably go for another professor. She is always available outside of class. If you need clarification, just ask in class, but be warned that it sometimes takes a while to get the point across.

Good teacher, pretty standard class. It's not hard. Just show up, do the homework (it's painless), read the textbook, and the tests just follow the homework.

Very interesting class, but not the easiest in the world. She takes attendance every day, but it is not mandatory. However, I'd recommend going to class because it will help you understand the material better. Dr. Shi can be hard to understand at times, but just listen carefully and don't be afraid to ask questions. Reading the book helps a ton!

She is a little difficult to understand and I don't think she understands us when we ask questions but if you do the homework, the questions are near identical for the tests. Pretty easy to get an A
