Comment:
His grading is so subjective. If you have a different opinion, your mark will be extremely low. He doesn't accept different perspectives though he said he would. Besides, he always talks about politics in class and criticizes Chinese government. In the final quiz, the questions are all about Chinese history, but not "literature"!!!

This is a knowledgeable and fair instructor. You will receive a decent grade if you put in a genuine effort to attend all lectures, take notes, and do the required reading. Just reading the comments made by the people who complain makes you wonder how they even passed grade school given the pathetic spelling and grammar.

Very kind prof! Flexible and considerate! Go to his lectures, listen attentively and take notes! He gives interesting background info about authors and their works. Exam essay questions are those covered in class, so there shouldn't be anything surprising.

He is not a easy marker, but justified. He not only teaches you the knowledge in the textbook, he also teaches you many things that u just can't learn from the textbook. Get him and prepare for the exams, then you will be fine

one word: hard. but atleast he tells you what will be on the exam, and you will always pass the exam if you actually do it...he calls it "insured." but overall, not a bad prof., he marks hard but i think thats because we are in university now and should be realistic in marking, can't really blame him

One of the greatest prof at UBC. He is easy-going amd funny. He always tells you clearly what is going to be on the exam. I told him I got something important to do on the day of the midterm, and he was willing to reschedule the midterm for me. Yes, a really caring prof.

Great prof overall, very easy-going and lenient. If you're an average or below average looking male but you are very funny and likes to lie, you will do well in class. The prof enjoys chatting to students afterclass and is always available in his office. You can ask to see a map of China anytime and he will always have one to show you.

Loved his rants about "disqualified" Cantonese teachers. His grading is a bit on the harsh side but gives "insurance" guaranteeing you to pass the course if you work hard. Aim for a B or B+ but nothing higher. He's a serious old Chinese man but funny as hell and knows how to take a joke or two, unlike other weirdos teaching Chinese at UBC.
