Dr. Schwerin is the worst professor I have ever had. He assigns readings along with a 2pg paper due twice a week. There are no tests and no final but the papers you write are your grade. He deducts from your grade every class you miss. He is extremely rude and talks down to his students. He will put you infront of the class and critique your paper.

The thing about philosophy is this: the words and thoughts of a philosopher must be examined with great care and attention. Professor Schelling taught me that philosophy is about discipline. It is about cultivating and heavily examining a person's viewpoint about ideas with logical arguments and evidence to back it up. Was worth taking.

Dr. Schwerin is a genuinely nice guy and is knowledgeable. He is the type of professor that you can talk to about anything (especially if you visit his office hours). You are given a homework assignment each class, which is reasonable. Only take his class if you are interested in philosophy and will respect his rules.

No midterm, no final, the only thing you are graded on is your responses to readings he makes you do. If you don't agree with his philosophy, you are wrong. Take notes of what he says so you can incorporate it into your essay when you hand it in, so you can potentially get a B. Doesn't believe in A's. Not allowed to use bathroom during class.

They should rename this class from Philosophy to Alans Philosophy. I thought philosophy was about viewing things from new perspectives and learning different ways of thinking, wrong. The entire class is him talking, and if he does give you the opportunity to give your input and you don't agree with him, he will call you naive and ignorant. Horrible

This professor wrote his own textbook which you must purchase so he can reap the profits, in order to pay for his new jaguar. Each and every class for homework you must read from this textbook, and respond to a question he asks in essay form. You are not allowed to go to the bathroom during this class. If you don't agree with him, good luck passing

Professor Schwerin is by far one of the best professors I have had as an undergraduate. He is hilarious and loves to hear students opinions on the readings discussed in class. You have a 250-500 word response due each class but he makes sure any confusion is clarified before class ends. Such a pleasure to have! I recommend him to everyone!!

Do not skip his class! Doesn't always take attendance, but if you aren't there when he does your grade will suffer. Read the text and respond for all classes, the course is kind of hard and I would not recommend it. You have to be very open minded and interested in the topic to do well. Pray to God he doesn't call on you to read in front of class.

Dr. Schwerin definitely makes an intro-level philosophy class a lot harder than it has to be by assigning readings and essays for every single class. The good part about this class was the fact that we didn't have any tests. Once you get used to the layout of the class, it gets easier to understand. I was stressing in the beginning, but I did well.

This class is very difficult. Professor Schwerin expects his students to have a background in philosophy and understand the readings. Very tough grader. The only good thing is he goes over the responses in class and explains the readings so you can revise your responses and there are no tests or a final. Easily my hardest class of the semester

I agree with a few others here and say that students should realize that the best professors are the one who make you work hard for that grade; chances are you will really learn something along the way. Dr. Schwerin is such a teacher. Almost 15 years since I've sat in his classroom, I can say without reservation that he is one of M.U.'s best.

Schwerin comes off as a real jerk for pretty much the entire semester. However, it is because he is so interested in what he is talking about and trying to pass it onto his students. However because most of the students here are materialistic and unwilling to embrace what he is teaching, gets bad rating. Very tedious class, but VERY helpful in life

The people whining about this man need to take a look at what it means to be in college. You are here to work and get an education, not take classes and hope to automatically pass. Prof. Schwerin is a brilliant man, and his class was my favorite. Have an open mind, and prepare to be challenged! That's what college is about. Remember why youre here!

Schwerin is so boring. if you miss one class you lose points off your final grade unless you have a doctors note..have to read a section from the book and write a response for every single class, one term paper, and a final. i hated this class. he knows what he is talking about but doesnt make it interesting at all. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN

This guy is not that bad. The material is a bit difficult to understand and he can be a tough grader, but if you go and see him for help he'll give you a more in depth idea of what he wants. There's a good amount of reading and writing but once you get the idea, the class is pretty simple. Plus he's a nice guy but a bit subborn.
