Comment:
Alan has a tendency to be somewhat condescending at times, but he means well and knows Ochem. Yes, his exams can be hard, but Ochem is a hard subject--I can't think of how any teacher, no matter how good, could make memorizing reaction mechanisms fun.

Alan spent about 10 minutes on lecture each class, and then assigned group work packets that the textbook company made. F for effort, Alan.

Comment:
He really doesn't have a way with words, and doesn't always seem to want to share his knowledge. It is easy to be offended, and he can be very late in returning work that makes success hard with so little feedback. I look back at Reed and would rate him in my bottom two for profs from a group I rank very high in general.

Comment:
Although I felt like Alan's teaching was adequate, I was fairly disturbed by his teaching style. He constantly mocked students publicly for asking clarifying questions. As Reed is typically a place for open discussion, I was very disappointed that midway through class I found it easier to stop asking questions than to deal with Alan's hostility.

Alan has valuable things to contribute, but he goes through cycles of interest/disinterest in teaching. If you catch him on an upswing, you can learn a lot. If you catch him on a downswing, though, he'll stand you up for meetings, not return assignments, etc., etc.

Alan did not come off very well when I had him for lab in intro but I took his upper-divisional class anyway and it's the best class I've taken. Alan is extremely patient and gentle in his explanations. He teaches very interesting material in a way that is very effective in making me understand and remember it. Take his class before the chem qual!!

I seem to be one of the few that really likes Alan. He tries so so hard...at all of it. He loves to teach, and to explain (and overexplain). He tries so hard to be paternal. Sometimes he doesn't quite get it down, but it's endearing. If you show enthusiasm and competence, he'll take an interest in you. He helped me through my MO theory crisis.

Comment:
He taught the worst class I've ever had in my entire life, high school included. He didn't do the work, even stopped bothering to give us problem sets for weeks at a time. The book was horrific. When you asked him questions, he hadn't done the problems yet. I learned nothing except that he values his games of pétanque more than his students.

I used to think that Alan was an ok guy, but this class has been the worst (by far) of my career at Reed. He didn't grade our problem sets until the weekend before tests, and didn't get that test back to us until the weekend before the next test! There were only seven people in the class, for god's sake. PS: avoid that book like the plague.

The key to Alan is just forgetting everything about him except that he knows Ochem. He's not that bad of a guy, he just has a tendency to be really insulting without realizing it. He does know his stuff, generally, and can be helpful. Just ignore things he says that make you want to strangle him.

I agree: one person's criticism of Alan's personality is sufficient for us all--his negative attributes amount to little more than a bumbling lack of attention and psychological astuteness, which should be easy enough for any self-respecting person to get past. On the whole I'd say he's an effective and knowledgeable teacher, and an amiable person.

he seems to rub people the wrong way, but i learned a lot in his class, and found him fun to be around in lab, and his lectures were very clear and helpful. he's a bit condescending sometimes, but not enough to cause this widespread dislike.
