Prof Mathas is a pretty quiet person but I still found his lectures interesting. There is a lot of reading but he always goes over them in class, and even points out important quotes for you to highlight. We write three essays that only have to be 600-750 words and had an open book midterm and a take home final. Learned a lot and would recommend.

Nice guy. Always well prepared and well organized. A teacher/professor who takes his profession seriously but knows that does not mean life has to be unpleasant. His accent is mild, no problems. Recommended

Profesor Mathaes is a wonderful teacher. We read a lot of really difficult books in his class, but he guided us through them and had great questions for us to answer. He's very friendly and made the class fun. I would recommend him to anyone who loves german and is looking for a challenge!

He's very informed in his study areas, and is open to new ideas. For a professor in the states he is sometimes unclear, however this is a side affect of the German university system. His methods are very typical of the european school system. This makes him very difficult for many american students, because of his cultural differences.

Do the reading, take the quiz, spend the rest of the class doing the reading over again out loud. A complete waste of time.
