Great professor and person. Classwork requires some effort, but you learn a lot. Quizzes aren't hard if you pay attention in class. Very interesting material that can be applied to real life situations. Studied Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. Great example of what philosophy courses in a Catholic institution should be like.

Incredibly boring and dry lectures. She speaks from an extremely conservative ideological standpoint and teaches everything as if it's fact instead of just one philosophical perspective. Gives hard quizzes, but tests are easy bc she gives you the questions ahead of time. TAKE NOTES. Can be pretty condescending. I wouldn't recommend.

I really like her. Extremely smart and passionate about what she teaches. Very clear about test questions and grading criteria. Show up, do the readings, put in some effort and she'll give you a good grade. Learned a lot in this (ethics) class that can be applied to real life situations. Would take her again!

will use up every minute of class time. will start a new topic with three minutes left of class, but will let you out on time. material is dense and dry. her personality doesnt add nor take away anything from the material. tests are mostly short essay driven. grades by half points no rounding. nice person.

Professor Ramos is one of the best and the most qualified philosophy professor SJU has to offer. She is very precise, and what she has to offer is very interesting. If you ask questions during or after class she will like you much better than if you sit there. If you pay attention and take good notes, you will definitely get a high grade!

Dr. Ramos is an incredibly bright woman who loves what she teaches and knows what she's talking about. She is not condescending, but just expects you to take her class seriously. She gives you the questions for the test beforehand, so just take notes and study the materials. She's a great woman who is passionate about the subject. Take her.

Comment:
Alice Ramos is incredibly condescending and uses her knowledge in such a way that makes her students feel inferior. Asking any question garners a facial expression from her that will make you never want to speak again in her class. In her class there is no room for creative thought and its her way or no way. Do not take Alice Ramos...

TAKE NOTES along with the notes she already gives you. They will save you. She's a fair grader and gives you the short answer test questions beforehand. 2 quizzes, 2 tests, 1 final - not cumulative. T/F are tricky. Put some effort in it, show some interest, and she will notice and bump up your grade a bit if she thinks you deserve it.

Not the worst class ever but I had her for Ethics and you will definitely have to work and pay attention to pass. There is a lot of reading and a lot of note taking during lecture. However, you may often find the class to be boring as her voice is monotonous. Overall, as long as you do the reading and take notes you should be fine. I managed a B+

Right... fine. Incredible how much material she covers thoroughly in a semester. Be prepared to use the textbook and take notes and highlight. She spends about a month on Aquinas, which is captivating because of her erudite background in Thomism.

If you feel inclined towards taking a Thomistic philosophy course she is the teacher to take at SJU. Very precise and helps to deepen your understanding of the readings. Be ready for her to teach every second of the class. Her notes are excellent and worth keeping for further studies and classes.

Gives easy TF tests and even a few pre-tests for practice. Can be a little arrogant/rude but I don't think its intentional or malicious. 2 papers, 3 main tests and class participation. She is good at giving real world examples to explain difficult stuff and rephrases to make sure you get it. Take her as I've heard some PHI teacher horror stories

Lot's of material but the only Philosophy class that I understood and passed with a good grade without all of the test being curved lol It's obvious that she truly believes in everything she teaches and I think thats one of the things that makes her a good prof. Take notes or ask her to send the class notes or you will drown.

The only PHI class I have taken that engages the class. Show up to class and take notes, or else you will be completely lost. She gives the essay questions that will be on the test beforehand, so if you study, you will be fine. If you're a slacker, don't take this class but if you put in some effort, you will get a good grade and learn something.

NOT AN EASY CLASS! Use big words, extremely sarcastic, class is very abstract and fails to address some questions. 2 papers, a few quizzes quizzes (all T or F) and 2 tests (Midterm and Final). Good thing about her is that she gives short answer questions on tests beforehand. Even though she's difficult and one sided, you learn a lot. TAKE HER!
