Not awful, but her expectations are often kind of unclear, until she marks you down with no feedback. Is occasionally weirdly passive-aggressive and snarky towards students. Tests are not crazy difficult, but more so than I would expect from a 300-level class. Would not take her again if I could avoid it.

Pretty tough test and various tough assignments, even though you have paid all the effort, not easy to succeed.

Comment:
Dr. Ohta research in Japanese sociolinguistics is very intriguing; it makes you think about how the Japanese language is used in society. In this course, students examined how foreigners learned Japanese and how her research has supported particular myths about the language. It really made students think about how to use Japanese with natives.

One of the hardest Japanese classes I've taken, don't take this class unless you have time the night before to cram, she doesn't tell you whats going to be on the test until the day before and exams count for 3/4 of your grade

It was my 3rd time taking her class and she's amazing. believe me you won't regret it! It's by no means an easy class in terms of following through the readings and papers but she's pretty lenient on grading :) my favorite so far was japan343 very, very interesting class. she tells funny stories that are actually relevant to the class topics too!

Amazing professor! I loved this class! Not only were all of the topics covered in class really interesting, but surprisingly as a linguistics course this class really improves your speaking (in Japanese). Plus, no textbook needed! It's also really inspiring to see a female white professor teaching in the Japanese department.

Fantastic professor. She never asks too much, but she totally expects you to keep up and understand whatever the class has already visited. If you fall behind, it's your own darn fault. That being said, the tests are very fair, and she is one of the most helpful people I've met since starting college last fall.

She is my most favorite professor ever!!The class is so organized and grading is very fair.Since she is an American, she understands and knows how to teach students in the most effective way. She's energetic and always welcomes asking questions in class.I was so happy to get to know her, and I also liked the relatively small class and classmates! :-)

Professor Amy Ohta uses power point and on-line handouts in lieu of textbook. Presents the material in a clear and interesting manner. Very willing to answer questions. Test is essay and short answer. Test is very fair. She wants her students to do well. Class was more interesting than I thought it would be.

She was alright. Her accent was kind of annoying. Her teaching methods at the time were alright (I took this class 1997-1998 term) considering that the textbook that's now used for Japanese 200 series was in beta form and we were the beta testers and guinea pigs. One thing to remember is that she really doesn't do the teaching. The TAs do the majority of the work teaching and explaining things.
