Dr. McDonald is a total dad-type, goofy but with an obvious passion for history; I've never felt so relaxed in a seminar, especially one led by the prof. The workload and marking is pretty reasonable, and I genuinely enjoy attending lecture

Amazing professor. His lectures are engaging and full of information, and he's so enthusiastic about his subject matter. He makes pretty much any kind of material fun to learn because he's just so darn excited about all of it. He can be a tough grader, but if you genuinely put in effort you should be fine. I plan to take any course he teaches.

Loved his lectures! They were interesting and engaging. I had him as my seminar leader and felt that he really helped me understand the subject and what was happening in the lectures. He assigns long readings for seminar, but you can get away without doing the readings for lecture. I found him to be an easy marker and all around a great guy!

He is a really engaging prof with a good sense of humour! His feedback on essay proposals is the best and will literally rework your essay for you! Probably one of the fairest markers in the department and one of the most well respected. Extremely approachable and really wants the students to succeed. He has a passion for teaching and it shows!

Excellent prof! He is very clear and passionate about what he teaches. You get the grades you work for. Make sure you talk in seminar because it can turn into easy marks. Gives the opportunity for success and is always willing to give helpful advice! Plan on taking all the courses he offers!

Great prof! His lectures are both educational and entertaining. He makes not-so-fun material really engaging and worthwhile. His constant joking in lecture and outgoing persona makes going to class fun. I would take a course just because it was being taught by him hands down. Extra tags: get ready to read, clear grading, good feedback.

Great guy, great professor. Cares about his students. Any honours history course is difficult. His emphasis is on final paper and seminar participation. Aside from the three previous tags I'd give him "there for you, skip class you won't pass, respected by students". Recommend this class to all history majors.

Was an amazing prof! Had him in seminar as well, and he was extremely encouraging. Really enjoyed his lectures even though the material was not always the most exciting thing. Very enthusiastic guy, and always willing to help out. Overall, really great guy. Will definitely be taking more of his classes.

I've taken classes just because he is the prof. He is a good lecturer, but you don't have to go to all of the lectures if you keep up with the readings: he chooses good course texts. Seminar participation is important, but he went easy on me because I am really shy. He is super NICE and accommodating and gives good direction. The best history prof.

While I don't find Viking history interesting, he made it bearable. He's very enthusiastic and obviously loves his job. He made some "punny" jokes which I thought was pretty dorky but totally fit him. Would take a course by him again, so long as it was vikings!
