Comment:
Professor Ipsen is a great person, but a very confusing professor. The whole class is based on working on journal entries and essays. The point of the journals is to get practice writing before the class becomes essay heavy. I would get A+'s on the journals and C's on the essays. So she didn't grade fairly. Hard to know how to improve your writing.

I learned important writing skills! I am not a good writer, but I worked really hard & earned an A-. I went to the writing center for every paper and I had my boyfriend who is a good writer look through my papers. It is important to come to class and participate. You get to drop a paper at the end of class & revise one to improve your grade.

My writing did not improve. I asked her how she thought I was doing & she said it looked like I wasn't trying, which pissed me off because I would go to the writing center, see her & do exactly what the paper said and end up getting C's on my papers. Go take another professor please. This class is not worth your time.

Five words. Do not take this professor. She is very vague with directions including the beginning of the class when she goes over the syllabus, so many students did not know what was due and when. Grades tough despite the fact that she expects you to know how to write like a professional. Asked for help on one of my papers and she turned me away.

One of the more challenging GE classes I have taken. This professor does expect a lot from her students and it by no means an easy A. She is helpful and respectful to all of her students, so I am not sure why she has gotten such bad reviews. My writing improved a lot, and I can thank her for that. Work hard and get a good grade, its not impossible.

Very nice lady. She was always willing to help. Yes, there is a lot of busy work, but it's nothing that we are not capable of. She read all my essays before I turned them in, gave me feedback, which allowed me to get a good grade in the class. You won't go wrong with Professor Ipsen.

prepare to write your ass off and read a ton. All the class time is useless busy work. She grades hard, and good luck reading her writing for feedback. Go to her office hours for extra essay help and you can achieve an A. The busy work isnt hard, but it is a waste of time. I like Ipsen as a person, but this class didnt further my writing abilities

This is a very hard class and Professor Ipsen, though she talks fast, has a large amount of information to cover in a very short amount of time. I unlike most enjoyed the subject matter but had to study my butt off to get a B. Ipsen is a great teacher and always ready to help. Utilizing her office hours is a MUST!!

Talks too fast, makes sure she singled out those on the first day who are repeating her class! VERY unprofessional! In her little mind she is a linguist bar none. In reality, she panders to women, makes her class impossible with her over analysis. Very disorganized, makes math mistakes on grading. Should not be teaching. Avoid

Ipsen is the worse professor ive ever had!!!! She takes attendance too seriously and gives you 2 absences for the semester. She gives homework everyday and its about 3 pages of review from an essay you read in class or from her own book. I stopped going to her class after she told me that she never read my essays or midterms and decided to fail me!

I have to rate when I saw so many fake ratings. Favors girls, talks extremely fast, is very old school, very hard to understand goes out of her way to make the class hard and actually called people out during class that are repeating - how unprofessional. Curt boring speed lectures, what can you say about someone who loves the bigot Noam Chomsky.

This is not an easy class, basically it's a math class where memorization and understanding are paramount. I managed to pull an A by attending every class, doing the homework and paying attention. If you don't put in the effort in this class you will fail miserably. She is a fine instructor though, the subject is just not easy.

ENGL 101 - College Writing. Great English teacher, very helpful and knowledgeable about English. Lots of group activity, peer review, and very little homework. I would definitely recommend having her.

Fair teacher.. Essays are graded by situation. If you have a long time to do a essay she grades tough. You will think she grades hard but by the end of you will see you just haven't put enough time in your paper. Lots of group work, in class journals, and readings. Keeps you all 3 hours. Find a easier teacher, I had harder upper division classes

Do not believe all the bad rep this professor gets. She knows a lot and cares about her students! I learned English as a second language when I was 19 and still got an A+ in this class. It's not an easy class, you have to attend every lecture, do all the homework and study. She gives a lot of extra credit too! If I got an A+, you can do it too!!!

This class is very difficult and required some someone who wants to be a teacher. Prof Ipsen makes a very difficult class even more difficult. She is hard to understand and assumes that you already know the material. As others have pointed out, it seems as if she is thrilled that people have taken the class multiple times. DON'T TAKE IPSEN

This class is a very difficult class. I took Ipsen's advice and saw a tutor, study the book and did extra homework problems...i'm still not passing the class. She mumbles and talks fast, her lectures are not helpful and group work in class doesn't help. You can try as hard as you can but you can still fail.
